Nobody is taking that much retention for four years for a second rounder

Fair, figured that might happen. SJ should just do 35% and have another team do 15%, but doesn't sound like they are.

Yeah I really don’t understand Grier (or maybe ownership?) logic. If you’re going to tie up retention for 4 years, might as well tie up a bit more to get substantially better of a return. I think most other teams will balk at 4 years of retention as a third party broker unless they get something really good too.

Grier said Plattner playing a role in the Karlsson trade discussion hence why retention won’t be 50%. Likely sharks’ dwindling revenue stream makes it not a great idea to pay a player 20+ million to play against you. Makes sense.

I don’t see this trade happening this upcoming season. More likely when the cap rises substantially this will happen.

Yeah I get it but also wouldn’t expect that much of a return. Ek is great but a lot of risk associated with rest of his deal.

Like I said when the cap goes up, everything on the Karlsson trade front improves. I think he wears teal for one more season. He shouldn’t have signed the deal, the writing was already on the wall before he signed.

For the Sharks, its just another Doug Wilson failure that Grier is trying to rub out.

True, but i think it's just pretty risky if he plays one more year. Injury, offensive regression, 34 y/o, etc. could make him considerably less valuable. If he can get a solid deal out of Car/Pit this offseason even if it means retaining 30ish% he should probably pull the trigger.

I don’t think a solid deal exists. Sharks cannot afford to lose the Karlsson trade twice, burdening them tenfold. On the other side of the coin he could continue dominance and put up 70-80 points.
