Description
Looking at the PLD sign-and-trade, and thinking that Lindholm is at least an equivalent talent but acknowledging he is three years older and the Flames are unlikely to do an extension with the trade, I think the trade value Calgary should be looking for is approximately equivalent to the PLD deal.

2nd round pick in each trade (I think the 2025 Boston 2nd will be more valuable than the Montreal 2024 2nd). 1st round from the Caps in place of Iafallo. Lapierre and Milano in place of Vilardi. Snively in place of Kupari. Might be some quibbling, another mid-round pick, a different prospect, but this feels about right to me.

Seattle feels like someplace that would not be on Kuzy's NTC list, and with retention and Seattle's needs I think the Caps can do a little better than the trades for Reilly Smith or Toffoli (who I think are better comparisons based on recent production/ceiling than Johansen).

Mantha for Garland gives the Caps some immediate cap relief and the Canucks two years' worth of relief. Pick goes Vancouver's way for the immediate cap hit and recent decreased production from Mantha (even if I agree with some others that, talent/ceiling-wise, Mantha is the better player). Garland is probably traded again at the draft so the Caps have room to re-sign several players and call up another young guy.

McMichael/Protas/Malenstyn fill in the bottom-9 LW role until Patches is ready, and then I think this is what the typical lines shake out as.

Haaaard pass on that CGY trade. Waaaaay too much. Can get an actual 1C with that package. Lindholm is very overrated. He's a 2C at best and we already have like 5 of those.

And if you're eating that much of Kuz a 1st needs to be coming back.

Kuznetsov creates a blocker for Wright if he is really going to be a 2C. Seattle passes.

Lindholm really is just Kuznetsov in disguise but can shoot more and cheaper. It’s not worth the assets we’re giving up to make that move.

Canucks only reason of trading Garland is to gain cap space. Mantha is older and more expensive and was pretty bad last season

Agreed that in this scenario it's too much to give up for Lindholm. However, in what world is Lindholm "Kuznetsov in disguise"?? Point production wise, they are similar, but that's where the comparison ends. Lindholm hits more, blocks more shots, plays on the PK, actually WINS face offs, and, was 10th in Selke voting this year(2nd last year). Not similar players at all. smile

They’re similar in that their offensive production is eerily similar - some really up years, some really down years. Kuznetsov isn’t the best defensive player, Lindholm has that on him, but Kuznetsov’s perceived defensive inability is a little overblown.

Considering that Kuzy can't win faceoffs, doesn't really hit or block shots, has bad TK/GV numbers and has a mediocre CF% considering how many OZ starts he gets, I don't think the perception of him being bad defensively is wrong. I've always thought Kuzy was overrated. Yes, thank God for him during the cup run, but if you gave me a choice of him or someone else, I'd take 50% of other 2Cs in the league in a heartbeat.

I guess I look at it this way...if I can have the same O production that Kuzy gives, but with a good to great defensive awareness...I'll take Lindholm.

Lindholm is a bona fide 1C. Over the last three seasons, he's 16th in points among centers. Kuzy is 33rd (one spot behind Chandler Stephenson). Lindholm plays about a minute more per game, and wins 53.6% of faceoff's vs. Kuzy's 44.7%. He shoots 1% better, too. He's a better shot, playing more minutes, winning wildly more of his faceoffs, and is three years younger. He's an upgrade in nearly every facet except maybe passing. There's no metric by which he is *not* a 1C.

He's good, he's not that good. There's evidence out there he's carried by his linemates. HIs possession stats are mediocre at best. That's an overpay for a guy that's about to become a UFA and won't be worth his next contract.
