Please provide explanation and trade comps to explain your decision (not trying to be hurtful, just want to know why it's 'realistic')

Younger player at same position, 1st and a prospect is sort of the standard template for trading a star. Mangiapane is better than the standard player in these sorts of trades though.

Edited to add, mangiapane is actually about a month older lol

Cgy doesnt have the cap space, Nylander needs an extension and if I'm the Flames I wouldn't want to give out another 10 million dollar extension to someone who hasnt played a game for them yet (It didn't work out too well last time) This is definitely one of the more reasonable Nylander trades but if it were up to me it would still probably be a no.

Not specifically. It's like the template, first, prospect and a young player

Not realistic. Robertson doesn't have near that sort of value. Hawks pass.

How much value does he need to have? Murray makes 4.6. You just took Bailey at 5 for a 2nd. So I would think to take Murray at less you'd want at most another second, or two thirds (as a third is here as well). Robertson is a very boom/bust prospect right now but I think he's worth a third

Bailey's cap hit at the trade is irrelevant. He cost the Hawks less than $3m in actual money to buy out, and his cap hit is like $2.6m for this season from the buyout. Murray would cost the Hawks twice that - $6m in actual salary and $4.6m cap hit. Murray definitely takes more to dump than Bailey. Boom or bust is a great description for Robertson with his injury history and small stature. Coming off a shoulder surgery, his value right now to me is minimal. No better than a 4th or 5th rounder.

If Robertson and a 3rd was all it took to move Murray, he'd be a Hawk already.

Main comps are Horvat and eichel:

Mangiapne is much better than beauvillier. Toronto also isn’t retaining on Nylnder like Van did with horvat. So this deal is better than what Van pulled for Bo.

Tuch is better than mangiapne so the VGK package is better than this, but when you factor in the premium for eichel being a #1 centre with cost certainty, it’s still fair.

I considered doing a meier style trade isntead but that deal was awful for SJ and would make even less sense for Toronto. It featured a cap dump, a plateaud prospect, 2 1st, and then multiple useless pieces from either side thrown in. Wanted to keep it cleaner

This is a better return than Horvat got, just similar structure in terms of types of pieces

Add literally whatever you want to make it fair I don’t care. Just threw it in last second. Main point is the cgy trade

Maybe Toronto adds matthews and Marner

Thanks for explaining it to me... Thought it was the Horvat comp but wanted to make sure it was. I, personally, am not a fan of Mangiapane... so who would you consider throwing instead of him to keep the trade realistic?

My ideal trade comp for Nylander is Horvat but a little more considering Nylander is more "proven" (despite not out-producing any other member of the "Core 4" in the playoffs over their respective careers) but prob. would have added another 1st/prospect/role player

I think it’s basically the same maybe worse. A middle 1st, a middle 6 player on a bad contract and a older prospect the doesn’t really have a high ceiling anymore

Complete outlier with an unsustainable shooting percentage

Mangiapne’s career shooting percentage is 14.98.

In 2021-22, he shot 18.92% which is about 4% higher than his current average and his 2nd highest shooting percentage in one season of his career.

In 2022-23, he shot 9.34% which is 5.5% lower and was the worst single season shooting percentage of his entire career.

If anything, last year is the outlier, not the 35 goal season
