What A Realistic Nylander Trade Looks Like

Created by: KingExLeafs
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 7, 2023
Published: Jul. 7, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Last summer Minnesota traded Kevin Fiala, who was coming off an 85 point season, to the Kings for prospect Brock Faber and the 19th overall pick in the 2022 draft.

Fiala has never had a 40 goal season and eclipsed 80 points only once in his career. Nylander just scored 40 and has racked up 80 points or more two years in a row. So he is the better player. And he's also a playoff performer, probably the best among the Leafs forwards.

The return Minnesota got for Fiala is the baseline, more needs to be added in a Nylander trade, but not a lot more. More than likely an established top 4 defenceman will be part of the deal along with a good prospect and a 1st round pick.

Certainly not trading for Murray with Robertson ‘covering’ his contract 😂

There is no such thing as a realistic Nylander trade without realistic contract demands. If you really think Nylander would sign $9.5 x 8 - Toronto should do that. My guess that isn’t realistic and that why we are where we are.

I think he's going to take less on a different team.

Nylander doesn’t strike me as the ‘take less’ kinda guy.

Nylander is worth a medium 1st and an A prospect. He is better than Fiala but also older and going to be more expensive.

Which is why he’s still a pending UFA with the Leafs.

I love Nylander and would love him on my team, but he’s not a franchise player. I wouldn’t support the Canes (as an example) giving Nylander $10.5 over 8. That would mean he’s worth 1-2m more than Aho, $3m more than Svech?

Toronto cap situation is toxic with a runaway one upping of Matthews, Marner, and Nylander all caused by 20% over paying Tavares.

He took close to 8.8% of the cap deal coming out of a ELC as a 60 point player and held out into the season to get that deal. Hindsight says that’s below market for the player, but wasn’t at the time.

He also has a 10 team no trade list.

He'll be 28 by the time his next contract kicks in. So he's still in his prime. And with the cap going up by almost 4 million next year reportedly there are a lot of teams that can afford to overpay him a little if they want him. Teams like the Islanders, Predators and Kraken all could use more scoring.

I think that you're right on the comparable values, but you have to consider two additional complicating factors: (1) Fiala was a RFA and had limited negotiating leverage, whereas Nylander is a UFA, and (2) Nylander, his father and his advisers are @$$holes, so they're not going to be any more co-operative or team-oriented this time than they were last time.

Good luck. I'm glad that he's not OUR headache, no matter how good he is.

Canes don't need to pay him 10.5M, 9.5M in Carolina could trump 10.5M in Toronto (depends on signing bonuses). So, while it seems like he would be taking less in reality he wouldn't be.

I could see CAR sign Nylander to a 9-9.25Mx8 and Aho to 9.5Mx8. Aho could even come at an AAV that's lower with his deal being paid out mostly as signing bonuses.

??? Kraken finished 5th in the league in goals for. Their PP and goaltending could use some help but the scoring is there.

I agree. The Kraken have a very balanced and deep roster. But there were reports that Seattle wants a game breaker in their line up, someone who can generate his own offense. Nylander fits that bill.

Just curious where were the reports from? DH and RF both are on record locally that they are going for balanced depth on the team so far.
“This time last year, we sat down, we looked at our team and said, ‘We can win through depth. Our top players have to do a good job but our depth is what’s going to separate us,'” Hakstol shared. “So we tried to really add in a few details to the things that we were doing that helped us do that.”

Takes a better person than I am to figure out the true tax implications but the calculator on CF tells me there less than a 9% effective tax rate difference between Raleigh and Toronto. So if Nylander gross’s $10m (easy math) he’d net $900k more annually in Carolina than Toronto. That’s not ‘nothing’ but it’s also not a deal breaker in this case.

If he’s asking for 10.5m in Toronto that be like 9.6ish in Carolina. I don’t see a team like the Canes paying a really good winger that amount right now.

It's a negotiation at the end of the day, he could try holding out until he gets what he wants but I think if he's traded to most teams and is paid 9-9.5M, that would get it done.

A lot of the times if a player likes where they are playing, and feels like they are being valued by the organization, they are likely to sign a deal. In Toronto, I think that looks like double figures or ar least 9.5M+ for Nylander.

The only way I think CAR wouldn't be able to work something out with Nylander (once you add in some signing bonuses) is if he's expecting from Toronto an 84M contract with the base salary being league min/year.

(Edit: Actually even then they could offer a pretty comparable deal at 72M contract with 16M in signing bonuses based off the tax calculator).

Sounds like a great contract the Canes can in on during July 2024, not sure why they’d trade anything for it.

I’ve said the only thing that makes sense is a Pesce (+modest pick/prospect) / Nylander swap with neither having an extension. Both teams take on the risk of losing the player in UFA.

Carolina definitely would only go for it if they are adding something modest. I think it would be a mistake for the Leafs to do that trade off but I can see it happening even maybe a 1 for 1 and we get a Hall for Larsson 2.0.

I think that while they will get a much needed defensive Dman that would make that Dcore look much complete, the top 6 and the forward group in general is going to start looking even more deficient especially if Bertuzzi doesn't end up being the real deal/can't stay healthy. Although, maybe they do get enough offense from the backend to balance things out. On the other hand, I think Carolina's team becomes more complete with adding Nylander even with going from Pesce to DeAngelo. That might be the worst part of this for the Leafs if they end up making it to the conference finals.

I'm starting to think though that they are the front runners for Karlsson so unless he ends up in Pittsburgh, then there wouldn't really be room for a Nylander trade I don't think.

They could actually make Nylander and Karlsson work (it’s be a stretch) for this year, but couldn’t afford both on the books next year without serious offseason maneuvers. They’d also have to dig deep into the asset pool. It’s the unlikeliest of unlikely, but not impossible.
