Roster Check

Created by: CCM46
Team: 2023-24 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 10, 2023
Published: Jul. 10, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I know EK65 trade could still potentially happen, however there is a very strong possibility that this is what the roster looks like going into opening night, and while I think it is better than what last year's team was, I do not believe that anything moves the needle enough to say the Penguins are Stanley Cup contenders. The only would be a lot of players not numbered 87, 71, and 58 would have to take major steps forward to begin giving hope

I attached Malkin but you can look anyone up.
https://moneypuck.com/player.htm?p=8471215

The only forwards who were above their average was Zucker (by like 1%) and Bonino (who played like 4 games for the Pens).

I am loving this conversation guys. Very nice. (I'm including you as well JSEB, but you're already quoted).

With the team above, what is the Pens win total this year? My guess is around 45 wins and 105 points.

Pens win total for the year with current construction of the team is probably around 38ish and around 85ish points around 38-35-9 mark for the year.

The season totals look accurate - maybe it's the career % that's off? Idk. The numbers I'm getting are

Malkin 11.3 vs 13.5 career
Guentzel 14.8 vs 15.7
Rust 9.5 vs 12.3

They're all lower so you're right there - I'm just not finding them to be as much lower as you were getting. I think it's a good chat as well - I'm enjoying it for sure. Idk, I'm more in the realm of like 40 wins 90 points - maybe 95 if everything goes right. I'm not too high on this team as it currently stands.

Absolutely, great convo. I'm thinking more around 85-90 personally. If everything goes right (Jarry plays well, core continues at elite level, no major injuries) then maybe they can jump up to mid/high 90s. But I think considering how good the east is, the minimal roster improvements, and every player being a year older I see them taking at least a slight decline.

Thats the ceiling I see for this team floor I could see not even 30 wins if something happens to 2 of the core 3 for extended time.

Agreed. Absolute max points I could see them getting is 90. The floor could be a lot worse. Any big injuries, Jarry playing bad, any players declining due to age I could see the point total going into low 80's or high 70's.

What would your new point total be if we get Karlsson?

Karlsson moves the needle, but not a tremendous amount if you look at the most recent construction for a EK65 trade I did today I could see that team producing probably a 45-46 win season around 98-100 pts but I think thats enough for playoffs

Yeah I agree. Apparently trade talks have stalled though because the Sharks want two 1sts. It's tough because I see Karlsson as one of the only trades they could make that would move the needle, but that 2025 1st round pick could be an extremely high one so it's a tough situation. Kind of frustrating because there were other moves we could have made to improve bottom 6 in free agency that didn't happen. I feel like we'll probably make one more trade, get someone whose decent but doesn't move the needle, and then miss playoffs by a good amount.

Well the Sharks want the 2 firsts because they technically don't have to trade him I would do some sort of lottery protection pick condition if thats the case or maybe make some condition to where if the Pens make the playoffs in '24-25 and Karlsson plays in so many games then a 2nd turns into a first sort of deal.

Yeah I would be fine making the 1sts condition. Would probably do 2024 1st unprotected and 2025 2nd that turns into 1st if Penguins reach 1st or 2nd round that year

I can see being a little down on this team. They heavily underperformed last year and are rolling the same team back.

For the shooting % I used the total shots on goal and total goals (prior to this year).

For Guentzel it was 105 goals in 763 shots on goal. That gives him a 5v5 shooting percentage of 13.7%. This year he shot 10.7%. 3% worse.

I'm guessing you were looking at overall numbers not 5v5.

Wow, I'm not usually the optimist in the room. So you guys think around 90ish points and no playoffs. Interesting.

It's hard to be optimistic when we saw the on ice product last year fail and this product isn't going to be leaps and bounds better

Yeah I just don't have a lot of confidence in the team as is. It's maybe slightly better than last year - but I think a lot of the teams around them got better as well. And Crosby and Malkin both being healthy last year makes me worried an injury is coming lol.

Ahhhh - that's probably what it was. the 5v5. Did you really go back and tally up the number of 5v5 shots/goals for every players career? Crazy dedication lol
