Briere definitely playing hardball over a 1st and 2nd for Laughton, but as the other poster said, Philly really values him even as an older player on a rebuilding team. Gives some indication of what he brings to the table, think he's a perfect vet for the Sens up and coming roster.
If we give up Joseph and a 3rd for him YES but if you pay more, you're just getting poorer which is exactly what Dorion has done for 3 years now. Just after the 2020 draft, the Sens had the best future in the league by a good margin and now they're trailing hard behind teams like NJ and BUF, even Columbus. It's a matter of time before MTL, DET and PHI pass us too. The hope is things turn around once Andlauer has control of the team
Joseph produce a bit less but is better defensively and has had elite metrics on the PK. He's a better skater too and 3 years younger

That 3mil cap hit carries a lot of value as well if only for another couple years.
A lot of value? How much do you think he should be paid? Do you realize that Chris Tierney in 2018-19 was 24 y/o and scored 48 pts (Laughton had 43 pts last season). Why do you think? He was playing 17 mins a game and given PP time on a bad team, exactly like Laughton.

Reilly Smith at 5mil and 3 years older is not worth nearly as much, though he's decent. I think we got our Duclair replacement in Kubalik lol, another Dorion masterclass in asset management.
Smith is a top-6 forward, Laughton is NOT. Duclair is significantly better than Kubalik offensively although Kubalik is better defensively.
And you can't be serious with "
Dorion masterclass in asset management"... he has absolutely no idea about that notion. I wouldn't trust him with a 10$ bill

Might be overvaluing Laughton here but still not feeling great about forward depth after this trade.
Yes you are, Laughton is an average bottom-6 forward given top-6 minutes, inflating his production
Of course forward depth is bad, Dorion has mismanaged the whole thing for years. The right play was to keep Paul and Brown happy, keep Gustavsson and go after the best RD you could instead of DeBrincat. We got Chychrun which is great but he's LHD

If you don’t like Laughton just say that instead of creating a useless debate. I don’t care about his metrics, he plays hard even if he isn’t the most talented guy in the league and had to fight for years and years just to prove he belonged in the league that’s the type of fight he can instill in our youth.
I have nothing against Laughton, it's the proposals and the thought that Dorion could possibly do something as stupid.
That you care about metrics or not, it is very important and plays a big role in the value of a player. All NHL teams are in on that, although some teams not enough it seems, like Ottawa and this is how Dorion manages to have a really poor bottom-6 once again, impeding his team for a playoff chance.
You know who else plays hard? Austin Watson
