You can't just run a roster of 20 players and they certainly aren't playing Colton at 4C

COL ACGMs should get off the Jonathan Toews train. It would be fun to have Tarasenko, but the Avs could do more for longer on both O and D using the money spent on him.

For real. Toews MIGHT have a 60 game season in him if he gets insanely lucky next year. But otherwise lets find some slightly younger and more healthy depth to drop 1-2 mill on. Also agree on Tarasenko. I wouldn't be shocked if he was looking for term as well, and we simply can't (and shouldn't) offer that.

Tarasenko has said outright that he is looking for term but may have to settle for one year which means he's going to want a big pay day for that one year. Can't see him coming to Colorado although it would be nice to have another high-end scorer.

There's two primary ways of thinking about how two use what little space they have left: 1) try to get the best player you can or, 2) try to add to the depth. I'm more than a little worried that the Drouin thing isn't going to work and they'll be hard-pressed for secondary scoring but also think they need to get better down the lineup. Colton and Wood help but there's still some spots to fill.

I agree with your two options of how to think about the cap space, and knowing Colton's deal would really help determine which path to take! Definitely share the Drouin concern, but I see it as a wash even if he ends up as a 4th liner. His numbers seem serviceable bottom 6 and he's cheap, so one way or another we'd likely have a Drouin-type guy somewhere in the lineup. IMO, the bigger need is for Johansen to work out at 2C. He doesn't have to be crazy good, just consistent and a driver of offensive chances. If there's enough concern from the Avs that both Drouin and Johansen could fail to get traction, then I'm more on board with the "get the best player we can" option and let those guys drop down to fill out the depth.

Drouin, IMO, has to be on the top two lines or he can't play for the Avs - he isn't good enough defensively to play down the lineup in that sort of role. I'm not nearly as worried about RyJo; he's got some solid, if unspectacular, seasons in his recent history while Drouin hasn't been any good for about 4-5 years. But RyJo is more a playmaker than a goal-scorer (describes Drouin, too) so who are the finishers in the top six? Mikko, Nate, Val and Lehky, right? Maybe the stars align and it all works but I'd feel a lot better if it were Tarasenko (not in the cards for the Avs most likely) than Drouin in that role.

I think Ryjo will be solid. It's just that given how some COL fans went rabid for a "true 2C" last year instead of seeing that the problems were much more on the bottom 6, I just hope people are satisfied with Ryjo just being solid and dependable vs. a world beater. It's a good point about Drouin's lack of D not ideal down the lineup. MacKinnon was right when he pushed the Avs to sign Cogs. Let's hope he's right again.

You're spot on here. You could've put ROR or some other golden center in the 2C role and it still wouldn't made much difference when it came to the playoff depth. We've done a better job of filling out our roster this offseason (provided we add one more piece) and if we can get lucky with Drouin and maybe one younger guy (JLF) I think we will be in a good place.
