Feel as though the Islanders offer was better, granted taking on JGP’s cap limits your flexibility after. Maybe it hints to the fact that they’ll aggressively pursue a free agent winger still?

I'm not a huge fan of Pageau. Hard to evaluate him given his very challenging deployment. But he doesn't produce much offense for that contract and I can see why Dorion preferred the Detroit offer.

Yeah, love pageau, but that contract would have been a huge problem

SIGNIFICANTLY better

Pageau + Wahlstrom > Kubalik and Sebrango

The problem is the Sens are too tight against the cap, that would have required some retention on Pageau and DeBrincat probably would have signed for a higher amount in NY

That you like him or not, very useful player. He's a very good 3rd line center

2015-16 23 OTT : Selke-16
2016-17 24 OTT : Selke-23
2019-20 27 OTT/NYI : Selke-13
2020-21 28 NYI : Selke-16
2021-22 29 NYI : Selke-34

56.3 FO% with NYI and 0.52 PPG (43 pts per 82 games), mostly at ES + PK

I don't think Dorion had much of a choice (DeBrincat would refuse to sign more than 1 year with the Isles?) but if he did, that would have been very stupid as that Islanders return is significantly better

Pageau is exactly what they would have needed. Either he would have played wing or 3rd line center to help Pinto develop his 2-way game faster.

Tkachuk - Stutzle - Giroux
Greig - Norris - Batherson
Pinto - Pageau - Wahlstrom
Joseph - Kastelic - MacEwen
Kelly

What a top-9 that would have been. Even the 4th line with Joseph on it (instead of Kelly)

You are just assuming the guest round pick is included and same with the article attached. How do we know it wasn't a second? Sure the get JGP who I really like and think he is a better all around player than Kubalik. Wahlstrom has greater potential than Sebrango but we will likely never know the rest of the deal. Either way it's done now and everything is speculation.

His 5v5 production is poor given his cap hit. But his deployment has been rough too hence why I said he is not easy to evaluate. Kubalik is much safer. Pageau could EASILY become a bad contract.

ok looking at forwards 5v5 production for the last 2 seasons combined

Pageau ranks 195th with 47 pts

It's not great or anything but considering there's 32 teams and there should be 192 Top-6 forwards, he has high end 3rd line production... and considering that his 2-way game is well above average, his contract is not that bad. Ideally, you'd have him at 4.5 or something but 2-way shutdown centers are valued in this league

Kubalik is not safer or anything, he's not even close to be as good as Pageau. And even offensively, he had 3 less 5v5 pts in 12 more games

Of course there's always risk with term on a contract but Pageau is 30, has 3 years left and hasn't been injured too much or too seriously in his career.

They've produced at nearly identical 5v5 rates over the last three years. Pageau is a far superior all around player. He also costs twice the cap hit and has three years remaining and is two years older. He would be the far riskier and far higher upside option. Given Ottawa has a competitive window just opening up, I agree with not taking on a risky contract. Then again, Dorion probably shouldn't have acquired Debrincat without knowing he would extend in the first place.

There's a LOT of things Dorion shouldn't have done. I don't have all day to talk about it now lol

A few things for next season (2024-25) :

- NHL salary cap will rise significantly

- Ottawa has dead money expiring ($1,562,500 from Murray retention, $1,833,333 from Bobby Ryan buyout and $750,000 from Del Zotto buyout. Plus an additional $625,000 from Colin White buyout, which accrues Sens cap space for that season)

- Sens should be freed from Dorion's mismanagement by then

- Kubalik 2.5 AAV also expires, could be replaced by a cheaper forward. Kelly deal expires

Sanderson and Brannstrom are the only 2 guys who will need a new deal. Maybe Pinto if he is bridged only 1 year

Sens will have more than enough money to sign Sanderson but yeah Brannstrom might be traded by then (for a good young-ish forward?) and leaves his spot to Kleven. Brannstrom might start to become too expensive anyway and the team needs will not be on LHD

Pageau's cap hit would have been a non-issue after this season
