Avs are -200k in cap space and have 6.8 million in LTIR.
Colton is gonna eat at last half of the LTIR and meyers will eat 925k at least but he can be buried in the minors .that leaves you with 3.2 million of LTIR. Assuming suter gets 2.5 that leaves you with about 700K. With that being said avs are gonna have trouble calling up players due to injury since they only have 700k.
That's why if you trade Girard you get alot more depth forward wise and defensive wise.
Exactly my point. By they time they add Colton and Meyers contracts, they have no chance to get under the cap on opening night. If you use LTIR to get under the cap on opening night, the team no longer is allowed to accrue cap space during the season until they get under the cap without LTIR. and the LTIR usage is capped at what is required to get them under. So in this scenario, Gabe's LTIR allowance goes from $7M to around $4.5M because you left $2.5M unused.
The Avs best course of action is to field a 23 man roster as close to 83.5M as they can get and then send guys down as they need to in order to gain that cap space back. Trading Girard and not using all of that space to make the overall roster better this season is an awful idea. I get you want to move Girard for cap flexibility, but they are better off waiting until next summer to move any of the defensemen unless they are getting top quality return for them.
EDIT:
Long Term Injured Reserve (LTIR) - High Level Overview - From Puckpedia
-To qualify for LTIR, a player must be expected to miss at least 10 NHL Games AND 24 days of the NHL season
-When a player is on LTIR, a team may exceed the salary cap. Despite the common misconception, LTIR does not remove a Cap Hit from a team’s overall Cap Hit, it just potentially allows the team to exceed the salary cap.
-The amount that a team may exceed the salary cap due to LTIR is commonly referred to as the “LTIR Pool”
-If a team is cap compliant on opening day without using LTIR, or uses LTIR at any point during the season, the LTIR Pool is the Cap Hit of the LTIR player less the team’s cap space when the player goes on LTIR. For example, if a player with a $4M Cap Hit goes on LTIR when the team has $100K of Cap Space, the LTIR pool is $3.9M ($4M-$0.1M). Because of this, team’s often make several roster moves right before a player goes on LTIR in order to be as close to the cap as possible, in order to maximize the LTIR Pool
-
If a team cannot be cap compliant on opening day without using LTIR, the LTIR Pool is the amount the team exceeds the Cap. For example, if a team is $3M over the Cap and places a player on LTIR with a $4M Cap Hit for the opening roster submission, the LTIR Pool is the $3M that the team exceeded the cap
-While on LTIR, Cap Space is no longer accrued, meaning any portion of the LTIR pool not used cannot be used later.
-When a player comes off LTIR, the team’s annual cap hit for that day must be under the Cap
