An interesting trade

Created by: CapFriendlysFinest
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 19, 2023
Published: Jul. 19, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I do believe this trade 100 percent favors the Wings, however it is interesting to see the Leafs with the added depth with Raymond and Fabbri.

I don't think Brad is going to let Nylander get anywhere close to that 10 million number and nor should he be. If Nylander does not want to move off his number, it is likely he will be moved.

While the Wings likely don't have the cap this season to sign Nylander, the cap going up to nearly 88 million next season as well as not having Perron's nearly 5 million in cap space makes it easy for the Wings to consider the move.

Thoughts?

What does Nylander do well? Put up points. Where did Nylander finish in scoring? 20th. Calling him a top 20 player is wrong. Forward, maybe.

Regardless, trading Raymond for him is dumb. Not because Raymond is better, but because he is cheaper, younger and has a high ceiling. That's what the wings want.

I hope Raymond turns into Nylander.

Younger and cheaper, absolutely. That doesn't necessarily mean better, in the long run. Nylander is a guarantee.

Higher ceiling than Nylander? No I don't think so. However, completely agree with the cheaper, younger aspect who is till right now at the very worst, a 55 point 21 year old.

10x the player, not necessarily the value.

But yes, you can argue top 20 in the league or not all day long.

I think I would still disagree. Raymond is a great player already, and have had the pleasure of watching him play in person a bunch of times. He doesn't have the raw skill that Nylander has but he works hard to get to the puck.

I guess we can always argue top 20 , that is what makes talking sports fun ahah!

I was pretty disappointed with what I saw from Raymond last year. Points are nice but it's how those points come that matters more.

Really hope he shows some new colors this year.

I know but Nylander is expensive. That is always a factor in making tades.

I wouldn't make the trade if I were Yzerman unless I intended to flip Nylander, but in terms of value, he would be crushing Treliving in this deal. Or put it this way, if this deal was made today and both GMs went to move the pieces on July 19, 2024, Yzerman would still be able to get more back. Raymond is a complete projection at this point. His scoring efficiency declined greatly this season. That's a troubling sign compared to how Nylander was at the same age. Obviously he should have plenty of improvement left, but I wouldn't be willing to gamble on that if I were Treliving.

I think, if anything, Chiarot definitely opened Raymond's eyes to his glaring issue of being weak.

I think we see an 82G/164A/246P season.

I think he SHOULD rebound well with Cat being there. I am excited to see how he plays this year

Don't think we see them paired together.
Raymond, although I expect him to get stronger, is still not the strongest.
DeBrincat, although definitely has some bark, is 5'9"(?).
I think we see Perron at RW1 for his bite, and then Raymond on second RW.

To think all players develop the same is comical

Yep, can totally see that playing out.
Just make sure you guys make the playoffs before Ottawa or Buffalo please.

Buffalo is going be scary in the upcoming years

To suggest Raymond's massive scoring efficiency decline this season isn't at least reason for pause is insane homerism. Any NHL front office would take note of that given his deployment and on ice shooting % wasn't radically different. Certainly recoverable, but he isn't a player I am counting on yet either. Which is why the exposure risk to Treliving would be too great to take on this deal. He could still easily end up being anywhere between a bust and an all star.

Doubt we make before Buffalo. Adams has done well (and their lottery luck certainly helps). Ottawa is a maybe? I think we finish relatively close until we see several of our prospects graduate.

I should state that I am a fan of both Detroit and Buffalo before they become the two top teams in the Atlantic.
I ain't a bandwagon!!!!

I love Detroit. As a Michigan boy, that part is kinda obvious.
As for the Sabres; my dad was born and raised near Buffalo. My uncle was a season ticket holder until 18-19. It's definitely not a 1A/1B, but more of a 1A/2B.

Indeed. Wish we picked him, but can't be angry at Danielson pick. Although I am scarred from our horrendous history drafting in the CHL, Danielson is truly a diamond in the rough in a literal sense. That Wheat Kings team is hot garbage. Watched a few of his highlights, and some of his assists were basically just him bouncing the puck off his teammate's body.

That's clearly the logical thought. The moves the Wings made recently makes me feel like they want to compete this season in a weakened Atlantic

The Wings will be better this year but I think the competition in the east is too tight for Detroit to make playoffs this season. Yzerman filled all the holes in the roster with UFAs and has said he like to see the prospects have success as a group in the AHL before bringing them up. Edvinsson might be the only prospect to come up and stay up this season but I think they take it really slow bringing him back after what they went though with Vrana.

Metro

NYR

Atlantic:
Toronto
Florida
Tampa Bay - This could either Boston or Buffalo. I went with TB because currently Vegas (sport books not the team) has them just ahead of Boston in Stanley Cup odds.

Wild Card:
Boston
NYI
Buffalo

Both teams missed the playoffs but they have made moves that says they aren't giving up yet and with players like Crosby and Ovie you can't count them out yet.
Pittsburgh
Washington

Ottawa - They could finish ahead or behind Pittsburgh and Washington. They are definitely a head of the teams below. But like Detroit the competition in the East is just too good.

I think we are about to see the end of the dominance that has been Boston, Pitts and Washington very soon.
