While this is obviously a terrible deal for Carolina, the difference between Petry and Pesce wasn't as astronomical as it is being made out to be by CAR fans. Petry got significantly harder deployment while out producing Pesce at 5v5. Removing AHL caliber Dumoulin from his TOI sample and he was very sound.

Especially at 3.125, he's been a disappointment in Pittsburgh because he was made out to be #2 D and protect us from a Letang injury. He's playing below a 6.25 million salary but he is a #4 and at 3.125 is paid for his value

I don't think Petry is cooked, just too expensive
Yes Carter is a dump
Do you prefer PO Joseph?

I'd say fair value for Petry is around $5m. He's no more overpaid than Rutta and far from the liability Granlund and Carter are. If Petry were a UFA this offseason, he would EASILY be the best RD UFA and get $10m/2 yrs. His problem last season was Sullivan's stupidity on giving Dumoulin way too many minutes and his durability.

Petry at his age and contract length is a cap dump, carter is a cap dump, smith is looking like a bust (even PIT only gave him a 1 yr offer), so its nothing of interest for CAR

You have hardly, if at all, paid to dump Petry and Carter, so what exactly are you offering up for Pesce? Canes have no incentive to take on 2 bad contracts with minimal incentivizing, and just to give away Pesce as well. Canes pass and don’t have to think twice about it.

Obviously there's disagreement about whether or not Petry at 3.125 is a dump so it's hard to defend what I've paid to "dump" him.

Any hockey "fan" that believes Petry is a cap dump at half his cap hit has the hockey opinions equivalent to used toilet paper.

Petry had a good year last year. His contract isn't good, but he isn't even close to being cooked

Does this even work for the Pens cap wise with the Petry retention? The cap hits seem pretty similar going both ways here, no?

With Carter being part of the deal it works out to Pens having just over 7 million tied up in Petry/Pesce and Canes having just over 6 million tied up in Carter/Petry

It works out for Pens with the planned buyout of Granlund and leaves them with another 3 million to sign a UFA (Kane, Tatar)

The trade as you have it here has the Pens moving out $7.025 in cap space and bringing in/retaining $7.15. Or is my math wrong? The ACGM you linked too doesn't have any retention on Petry. That's why I was curious since this one does

Sure, a Granlund buyout could fix the issue - the chances of him being bought out are slim though

The less than 1 million difference if whether or not Smith/Joseph is on the roster this year or just next season to replace Skjei

Woops for sure a mistake on that other ACGM team, fixed now. Still works without a Granlund buyout (just no UFA addition unless you buy him out). I also once thought it was unlikely but his buyout is actually a really easy one to swallow

In terms of cap I was looking at it from the Pens side of things - not Canes.

All good lol. Yeah with no UFAs and a Desmith dump it does look like it would work with no buyout. Even though it works, is it actually a good trade for the Pens though? Basically Pesce in for Petry and you're losing a 1st and Smith? Not so sure.

Oh his buyout is definitely easy to swallow. I just said chances are slim because Dubas made it known that he doesn't want to buy anyone out. Doesn't mean it's impossible, just improbable.

I think Petry to Pesce is an upgrade and it saves them 3.125 next season. But you're right that's a big pay for little savings and a slight upgrade. I think moving Carter to make sure Sullivan can't dress him is a win though haha.

I think another coach would know to scratch him unless you have injuries in which cases he's fine playing 30-50 games throughout the year

I guess it depends what type of defenseman you want. Pesce is obviously better defensively but Petry brings a little more offense and physicality. Maybe a slight upgrade. I can see both sides. It sort of saves them 3.125 next year, yes, but you also need to find another 2nd pair RHD next year then for under 3.125mil in order for them to actually be saving money. I think if no retention it would go a long way to making the addition of a 1st and Smith worth it - but I'm sure the Canes wouldn't like it then. I like the creativity though - not another Karlsson trade haha

Yeah - fair enough on Carter haha. I hope now that the Pens have 126 bottom 6 forwards that Carter will be scratched. Honestly he didn't do THAT bad on the 4th line at then end of last season.
