Not really, but in terms of same age production, Hughes has the edge. Pettersson’s defensive game is simply too far ahead to say Hughes is better consideration that Pettersson still put up more points while playing pretty heavy defensive minutes

Pettey had more points with worse linemates in a worse system and is better defensively

If Petey is better now, it's very close. The whole "he's on a bad team thing" doesn't hold up from an analytical standpoint. Kane got worse when he went to New York. Meier is the same player in Jersey that he was in San Jose.

I see a lot of people saying that Pettersson plays a complete two way game and that Hughes doesn't, which to me is nonsensical. Despite transition players being underrated defensively due to the inherent risk of an odd-man rush the other way, Hughes was still great defensively.

If anyone has Petey's microstats card please post for comparison.

I think Pettey vs Hischier is the proper debate. Not Pettey vs Hughes. Hughes is strictly an offensive guy at the moment. Hischier is a selke candiadate C. Pettey just missed out on a nomination this year also.

Pettey is the winner currently out of those 2 at the moment though, based on his point production as well.

Pettersson starts 59% of shifts in the offensive zone.
Hischier starts 47% of shifts in the offensive zone

There's progression and there's also contract. Let's see what Pettey's going to ask for next year. If he's looking for north of $11M...$3M per year is a big delta.

My Personal Opinion is that if you one one specific player to score goals, you pick Pettey, if you need one specific player to set up other players to score goals, you pick Hughes, Pettey might not be as fast as Hughes but can play defense better, Hughes would most likely be one any team's first Powerplay unit, but if you wanna rate them both overall, they'd be pretty darn close I'd say, if they were on the same team, I'd put Hughes on the first line then Pettey on the second, that'd be a pretty great one two punch for any team

Hughes and Hischier were on the ice together for 16 minutes of 5v5 across 77 games. Saying they have each other is completely disingenuous.

Hughes scored more goals this year than Pettersson. 43 goals in 78 games vs. 39 in 80.

The ultimate EP40 vs. Jizzy debate from last summer
Good times. Starts at page 43.

There was a whole thread dedicated to this topic created around the same time but I couldn't find it.

This is from earlier in the season. I have been tracking Pettersson’s numbers the whole year and they only went you from there. I don’t think he has posted the large micro stats. His chart though. His overall defense WAR is dragged down by the season where he was playing injured. He was near top of the league this year. Hard to tell the exact number, but is defense WAR was around 90+ this year from the looks of the chart

Also the model I use doesn’t paint Hughes in as good of a light as Jfresh, but he uses percentile rather than concrete numbers so maybe they do align. Either way, Pettersson has a much greater defensive burden

Poor argument. Linemates wasn’t a problem. Only reason Pettersson may have lower offensive numbers (still more points) is because of defensive zone deployment

Based on these charts I would say this confirms that they are at about the same level. Factoring in age and contract, Hughes should be the clear favorite.

On the number of points they had, they both paced for 104 over 82 games.

On deployment, they were both heavily favored towards offensive zone starts, with Pettersson starting 59% of shifts and Hughes 72% in the offensive zone at 5v5. In any case, I believe that the JFresh model attempts to account for deployment.

It doesn’t. It shows overall impact and production. The model can’t account for everything.

Jack Hughes defensive zone starts: 5.1%

Elias Pettersson defensive zone starts: 16.1%

That’s a pretty significant difference. Also, Pettersson has the unfortunate task of putting up with the Canucks dreadful PK

The model is fed zone start information. How well it accounts for it is another matter. The model gives off/def/overall numbers at 5v5. PK WAR does not factor into these.

Where are you getting those numbers? It is unheard of for a player to have that high offensive zone starts. Most of the time players start their shifts on the fly. I don’t think it is possible for a player to start over 50% of their shifts in an offensive zone faceoffs.
