You claim Pettersson doesn’t make his team better. Let’s see if people agree

Yes having Petterson makes the Canucks better than what they would likely get for him in a trade. But paying him 9.5m when his contract expires doesn't making the Canucks better.
Same with Leafs, if they pay Matthews and Nylander 2m more each next season....the Leafs aren't any better.

Finding anyway to keep Pettersson below 10 mil would already be a steal. When guys like Barzal get over 9, I can’t see Pettersson asking for less than 10

There is literally not a single argument that can be made here. Petterson is the Canucks.

That's the dilemma for any GM. If let's say 10m is the maximum limit you wanna pay, and you "lose" the player because he signs elsewhere for 10.5m.....well you're betting you can spend 10m better than resigning the player.

We don’t agree on a lot of things, but some things like this are so obvious. If we agree on something, then it must be realistic

It’s hard to find a comparable because guys like Elias Pettersson don’t get traded often. Tkachuk is a comparable, but he was traded for win now pieces like Huberdeau and Weegar. Calgary ended up looking foolish after the year Tkachuk just had

Good comparable with Tkachuk but he was just one year away from being a UFA....Pettersson is two years. IMO it was a good trade between Calgary/Panthers for both teams. Where the Flames made a massive mistake was resigning Huberdeau to the worse contract in the league.

Well with him they’re probably a bottom 10 team in the league. Without him they’re definitely a bottom 5. So by definition yea he makes them better

No he actually makes them a lot worse, the Canucks would be wise to trade him to Toronto

I can’t see him signing for anything less than $10.5M .. likely closer to $11M especially on a long term deal. He took his chance on a bridge deal when the team didn’t wanna pay him $10M x 8 years before. He’s going to cash in this time and with the cap going up that number only gets bigger.

He’s better than Huberdeau at $10.5M. Arguably the same as Marner at $10.93M but Pettersson plays a more valuable position. I can’t imagine anything less than $11M unless he takes a hometown discount for $10.5M

I think Pettersson for Jarnkrok should be sufficient. Just to maintain Swedes/60

TSN just did an article on this. The Canucks are 2 teams, a good one when Petterson and Hughes are on the ice. An okay team when one of them are on the ice and literally a lottery team when both are on the bench. Petterson is your best player and a top 10 player in the league.

We can thank Jim Benning for being the reason Pettersson will likely never see a cup in Vancouver

Calgary looked a lot worse in losing Gaudreau for nothing.

I think Alvin hasn't been much better. They should have traded Miller 2 years ago.

Typically top 10 players in the league make their team better but habs fans wouldn't know that, I really don't get the disrespect Pettey gets from other fanbases,

Well the Flames were actually a playoff team with Gaudreau. Teams almost never trade their star players even if they are upcoming UFAs if they are making a playoff or Cup run,

If a top-10 player doesn’t make his team better in a 32-team, 700-player league….someone is going to have to explain the math here

Benning left them in a position where rebuilding wasn’t a big option because Benning already committed to competing with the awful OEL trade. That was a turning point which set the Canucks back years. Allvin has done a pretty good job given the circumstances and poorly constructed team given to him

@GuyGuyGuy

You can explain your case to the people here.

Justify your reasoning of saying Pettersson doesn’t make his team better and how you measure players based on how “fun they are to watch”

I also find it interesting how even a non Canucks fan has stated that Pettersson is a top 10 player. Gosh I thought you said he wasn’t even top 15, much worse than the likes of Sebastian Aho because he is “more fun to watch” and a “better leader”. Aho is also apparently better defensively too right?

Until he extends, just hope Pettersson’s agent takes a similar view. Nothing but a run-of-the-mill $5m center. A Ryan Strome type (but for 8 years).
