Dallas doesn’t have the cap now or later to make that move, also doesn’t make sense Johnston has progressed well and should form a very good Center duo with Hintz, dellandrea also broke out somewhat last year and was solid defensively

As you know there really isn't such a thing as "sign and trade" from a top contending team who has one year left on contract. I would like to see an example where such a team allowed a player to negotiate with another team.
Dallas says no anyway. No cap and Johnson isn't for sale.

Nah. Dallas would be asinine to move Johnston considering how good he is. His ELC deal is way too valuable for us with us having old geezers like Seguin and Suter with long-term contracts.

If TOR takes Seguin off our hands in this exchange I'd probably consider it. That makes it more realistic for us to actually re-sign Nylander.

Nylander would have to agree to a very team-friendly number to get Dallas to part with Wyatt

Dallas doesn’t have cap space for that and I don’t see them giving up Wyatt. Trading for Nylander after signing Duchene also makes zero sense. Dallas also doesn’t have the cap space to keep him long term. Trades have to work for both sides

I think they allow teams to talk…without any agreement to be made. For instance, Devils spoke with Meier’s agent. Just have them some comfort that they could extend him.

Thanks for proving my point. Read what I wrote. CONTENDING teams do not allow their star players who are one year away from a new contract to negotiate with another team. Again I would like an example....cause I can't think of one
Meier was not on a contending team. His contract ran out in a few months, and Meier was gonna to be negotiate with any team in June as a RFA.

Does not happen in the NHL much but Treliving did it with Tkachuk.

No, thanks for proving my point again. Tkachuk was not under contract for one more year. He was a RFA, and could negotiate with any team.

Dubois and M. Tkachuk

Thanks for proving my point. As any knowledgable hockey fan would know, Tkachuk and PLD were not one year away from having their contract ending. Like one week
Both were RFAs and were able to negotiate with any team in the last week of June. Hardly the same thing at all. as Nylander
As a wrote, Nylander is a star on a true contending and his contract ends one full season away. Show me one example where a player in Nylander's situation that is allowed to negotiate with another team.

You do understand that players can negotiate a new contract when they are on the final year of the deal. You want another example? Hellebuyck. He said he wants to negotiate with the team that he is traded to

No you don't understand. You're so determined to justify a silly trade that you ignore reality. As I wrote, show me an example when a player from a Cup CONTENDER is allowed to negotiate with another team one year out from his contract. I can't think of one. Hellebuyck is NOT an example. Just a note, Hellebuyck's desire to negotiate with another team, doesn't allow him to do it. Jets have to give permission. I'm sure the Jets will do it. once they have tentative deal in place

Maybe you don't understand what a sign and trade is

a sign-and-trade deal is a type of transaction allowed by the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) where one franchise/team signs an unrestricted free agent or restricted free agent player to a new contract, only to then immediately trade him to another team of the player's choosing. This is typically done to enable the player to obtain a higher salary and/or greater number of years on their contract than salary cap rules would ordinarily allow a destination team that signs him directly to a contract.

True. But Nylander isn't in that situation is he. He's not a RFA. He is under contract for the Leafs for one more season
Again show, please show me an example....just one when a Cup contending team allowed a star player to negotiate with another team for the purpose of a trade.
Plus Nylander does have a M NTC....all RFAs do not have trade restrictions.
Please stick to facts.

That does not mean it can't happen. Prior to Tkachuk no one in the NHL had completed a sign and trade that allowed the player to get the extra year.

If a team has decided they are going to trade a player and allowing another team to negotiate a deal prior to the trade will bring back a better return why not do it?

Bahahah, I think I understand it perfectly fine. It’s not that hard to understand when you are in a final year of your deal, you can sign an extension

You don't understand. The Leafs in this case are not going to allow a star a player to negotiate with another team.

Maybe, maybe not. Why would any team want to sign Nylander to an eight year deal which would end at the age of 36.
He's the problem with allowing a star player, on a Cup contending team, with one year on his deal, to negotiate with another team.

So the Leafs call Nylander into the office. "We want your sorry ass outta town. We don't want you any more. So hurry up and sign a contract with Seattle so we can trade you. Of course if you can't come to an agreement with Seattle, you're welcome back to the Leaf family, for a Cup run."
Now, do you understand why I don't think there has ever been a situation where a Cup contending team allows a player to negotiate a contract with a star player one year away from his contract ending.

Here's my take....On CapFriendly, can't think of a good trade.....add extension to it.

What if you think of it like this.

The Leaf's have made the decision to trade Nylander. They have an offer on the table they are willing to accept. They also have a better offer on the condition of an extension. Either way the player is on his way out. They now have a chance to increase their offer.
