20 man roster with no cap space for a single call up is pretty worst case I’ll say

Getting rid of cheap players doesn't really help at all. They have to be replaced.
Keep 20 scorer, 2.1m Jarnkrok, 1.1m Timmins, and 1.15m Lafferty. That's 4.35m. Buyout Brodie costs the Leafs no cap this season. Now you got 22 man roster and 750,000 in cap.

The problem with buying out Brodie is running a right side with Klingberg, Timmins and Liljegren. None of those guys are d zone stalwarts.

True...but it's better than 20 man roster

Buying out Brodie is dumb. The problem with buying him out is the $2.5M cap hit next season along with the $2M buyout hit of Murray in this situation. Matthews and Nylander’s extensions kick in next season and you wanna have $4.5M of dead cap on the books? That is the biggest mis-management of cap ever. Dumb idea.

They’ll go with a 20 man roster which isn’t that bad and they’ve done before. They’ll send guys down who are waiver exempt (Robertson, Knies, Holmberg) on days where they don’t play so they can accumulate cap space. They’ll only be sent down on paper but they’ll stick with the team until next game day and be recalled so it saves in the cap. It sucks for the players because they’re paid at the AHL rate instead of the NHL rate for those days, but that’s what they’ll do.
