Lindholm and Backlund say nice try but they still won't re-sign.

Pens decline. Dubas doesn't want to move Pettersson for EK65, you're not getting him for Hanifin. Pittsburgh needs Petey more anyway: he's our best defensive defenseman and Hanifin is more offensive.

Hanifan is a big upgrade on Pettersson. If you don't want to move Petry, Granlundis still an option.

Not true. I'd take Hanifin all things equal. But Pettersson will be cheaper and had a career year in 2023.

Having seen almost the entirety of the Pens' games last season, I'd be surprised if Hanifin is better unless Petey regresses significantly.
Not a fan of moving Petry if it isn't for Karlsson. Petry is still a top 4 caliber defenseman IMO and the Pens don't have a sufficient option to replace him if we don't land EK.

Capfriendly right now has your defense as Graves and Letang, the pettersson and petry. You don't think it'd help the team to add some offensive upside to that pairing? Hanifan will at least be cheaper then EK65.

No because the difference in Petry to Karlsson is greater than the difference in Pettersson to Hanifin. I like Hanifin, but after the Graves signing there's no fit. PIT only has one defensive dman remaining in Pettersson. If idiot Hextall didn't give away Marino maybe it would be different.

Petterssons best season offensively is barely better then Hanifans worst.

I could be wrong here, I thought petry was more of a defensive defenseman?

Maybe compared to most of the PIT dmen (Smith, Joseph, Letang) are all much more offensively inclined. Petry even in his "down" season was still very productive at 5v5. Pettersson is the only dman on roster that is a very strong defensive dman. Dumoulin used to be years ago. Hasn't been that way in at least two years.

Ok, thanks for your insight. I really thought it was going to be leafs fans all over me on this one. Guess I've gotta go find another defensive LD to trade Hanifan for.

Defensemen do more than put up points my guy, and that's the point I'm making. Hanifin is better offensively. Pettersson is better defensively. I think they're both good #2 defensemen, but the Penguins need Pettersson's defense more than they need Hanifin's offense.

I was under the assumption Petry was more of a stay at home defenseman, so seeing 2 defensive defenseman paired together made me believe Hanifan would be a good upgrade.
