Does this make sense

Created by: Rob32sjsharks
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 24, 2023
Published: Jul. 24, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Sharks fan here just trying to think outside the box.
Toronto could use Karlsson’s offense from the blue line, Nylander is rumored to not be likely to resign.
This gets you out of the cap issues and gets you the Norris winning D and a younger RW with upside and grit to his game.
Is this a win win or does Toronto pas and prefer to move Nylander for picks and Prospects?

Not trying to belittle the Leafs and their players value, but the cap hell they created and the fact only 6/7 teams have reasonable enough cap space to take on Nylander's contract and of those teams only 2-3 are realistic possibilities this kind of makes sense.

Let me know what you guys are thinking?

Oh and I’ve been told moving Murray to LTIR is not an option or will be an issue because he was available for the playoffs and the NHLPA is keeping a close eye on that situation. Again I’m not an expert just relaying the things I’ve heard.
Trades
TOR
  1. Karlsson, Erik ($3,500,000 retained)
  2. Zetterlund, Fabian
Additional Details:
Nylander for Karlsson 1 for 1

This is why this whole part of the off-season is getting interesting. Everyone knows Toronto needs to dump cap. Whatever deal ends up happening, it won't favor the leafs or come close to it. From their perspective, they're trying to find deals that would hurt less than this one would. That being said, I think you're right in saying that a big move like this would solve their cap troubles. I think they'll go for a smaller bandaid than this one.

The smaller bandaid is moving Murray and a 1st for FC and Brodie and a 1 st or a good Prospect for FC This year, and lose Nylander to a team willing to pay 10 mil a year next off-season.

to me my offer hurt way less now and next year than that alternative.

I could be wrong they might find a way to make this all work out but Impersonally don’t see how. Then again there is a reason I’m not a GM in hockey so you never know.

Don't take the hate personally, man. Leafs are in a huge bind and I can't blame their fan base for not being happy with any of the proposed solutions. Look how long it took Minnesota to come to terms with the Suter/Parise situation. Tough to watch your team face having to lose good players during a cup window.

Not taking anything personally.

Part of me feels maybe I overreached and tried to hard to poach Nylander, and part of me feels maybe Leaf’s fans are being unreasonable in dealing with the inevitable cap nightmare created this off-season

A little column A, a little column B lol. But every actual GM in the league right now should be waiting to poach from this team. Especially if they can't buy Murray out.

But even buying Murray out doesn’t solve the problem.

You still would have to move another 5+ mil and Nylander isn’t resigning for anything less than 9.5-10 mil and after the last few years production I agree with his demands TBF.

If Toronto can get a high level NHL ready RW, another potential top 4 RD prospect and a 1st for Nylander and Buy-out Murray that might work.

I just felt my offer made the team better this year.

Since they signed Klingberg I'd say the Leafs are out on Karlsson. Klingberg is the dollar store version of Karlsson, and while two puck moving offensive minded defenseman on the right side would be a great thing to watch, I would seriously worry about the defensive zone, especially since Brodie is the teams best DFD and he's going the other way in this trade.

Given how Karlsson trades go on this site I'd be hesitant to move Nylander as well, and if it were a dealbreaker I'd decline. I think Toronto could get more mileage out of Nylander on the team or Nylander in another trade than moving him for Karlsson.

I would swap Klingberg with Brodie if that would work and swap the 1st to a 2nd maybe but getting fair value for Nylander won’t be easy for you guys with the whole NHL knowing you need to move money and very likely can’t/ won’t resign him this off-season.

But one just scored more points as a RD and won thenNorris and is signed for 4 years through your cup window and the other likely walks at the end of the season.

In a vacuum I would agree this isn’t logical but with a huge cap issue and sharks willing to take on a ton of cap to clean up your issue it kinda makes sense to me.

After all Vegas gave up Pacioretty for nothing last year because of cap issues this seems less of a loss to me.

Doesn't matter you never trade a guy passed his prime for a guy who just entered his.

Can’t say a guy who just had arguably his best season ever past his prime.
Your also comparing a F to a D
Typically elite D prime is later in their careers 27-35.
Where elite forwards are more 24-32.
There are exceptions obviously (Pavelski and Lindstrom)

Beyond that, do you think Nylander resigns for 7.5-8?
Cause I see him walking unless he gets 9.75 to 10 mil.

Look it's clear you think this massively benefits the sharks. So just knock it off. Nylander has been the better player for most of the past several seasons. Karlsson is not going to get better and Nylander still can and will. 5 years in age is way too big of a deal. Karlsson to the leafs is dead and has been since they signed Klingberg

I haven’t denied this benefits the sharks! The whole premise is that you guys have a little to no choice but to make a trade to get under the cap. This is the sharks utilizing that as a weapon while still giving you a somewhat fair deal.

You have to realize. Nylander is gone one way or another by this time next season.

You can’t afford his demands and you’re in big cap trouble. No matter what you’re getting a bad deal or two to get underneath the cap. I’m trying to give what I feel is the best deal out of a bad bad situation

They have to make some moves to clear space but that in no way means they have to lose a Nylander trade just to clear space. That's just stupid. They can trade loads of guys if they need to. Lafferty, Jarnkrock, Brodie etc. All good players on fair contracts that will have value. To say they have no choice but to move Nylander is 100% just hope on your part.

No one is helping you shed salary, at this point you’re either giving away assets and depleting your depth for nothing or paying a kings ransoms to move bigger cap dumps. Either way Nylander is gone nexr off-season. Good luck! I’ll concede this never happens and I’m wrong. But you need to concede your team isn’t coming out of this unscathed.

Or buyout Murray and run with a 20 man roster, it's funny how simple it is to make this work.

Damn yea cause the only way that works is keeping Gambrell on the roster and sending Knies down. That’s not smart and if anyone has to miss a game for injury they still have to dress out and sit in the bench or go to IR. Not smart to design a roster without wiggle room or have any healthy scratches for guys who get banged up and you’d likely lose Timmins or liljegren on waivers fyi.

Emergency call ups are a thing. And simply sending Lafferty down and risking losing him makes it all work. But let's keep creating reasons why the only option is giving Nylander away for nothing.
