Description
Disclaimer: The trade below is just a placeholder, and the roster isn't meant to be a realistic NHL roster.

People keep mentioning Frank Seravalli's latest podcast when it comes to the Karlsson trade. He said that the Sharks aren't properly valuing the cap flexibility they would gain by trading Karlsson, and I thought that was a poor read on San Jose's situation.

Before trading Karlsson we currently have 5.46m in cap space with 22 roster players. We have multiple other vets on expiring contracts that might be traded this season. Barabanov, Simek, Duclair and Labanc are all conceivably on the trade table before the deadline. Trading those 4 (including retaining half on Labanc) will bring us to $12m cap space with a 23 man roster.

Of course we'll take players back from those deals most likely, but $12m is still our probable room to work with this year when it comes to taking on short term cap dumps. This also doesn't include a Ferraro trade which is also possible (lots of LD in the system, he's most tradeable). Overall that's a lot of short term flexibility to take on deals at the deadline.

The Sharks also have $34m in cap space next year (without the salary cap bump). That's with EK65, Couture, Hertl and Vlasic still on the roster. We have no major RFA's or UFA's to lock up and we shouldn't be dipping into the major free agent signings yet. The Sharks don't need cap relief, so the value of getting rid of Karlsson's contract right now is minimal.

Apologies to Arizona fans. I just needed a proxy team for the trade.

Nice analysis. Actually EKs trade value might be the same next season. With the rising (maybe) teams might find his contract more palatable, and even three years might be more better than four years.
Course a lot depends on EK play well this season.

Trading Karlsson isn’t about cap flexibility, sharks already have that, it’s about admitting we’re rebuilding and trying to obtain some futures for the last great blunder from Doug Wilson regime.

Sharks are likely 2-3 years from going after any high priced FA or thinking about a legit playoff run.

Smart money is that the sharks cave and accept less than idea trade for Karlsson (or retain 50% for a better return) and focus on getting through the year to TDL.
Barabanov I could see the sharks resigning he’s a great guy and good player and would be a solid bet to have around the younger guys. Duclair is a potential but we won’t know till he is acclimated to the team.

But if the right offer comes in for either I would pull the trigger.

Exactly, which is why Seravalli's comments didn't sit well with me.

Always take the “experts” opinions with a grain of salt. They say things just to say them.
