Players never get full value. In a scenario where things breakdown between him and Toronto, he has a NMC and is a UFA at the end of the season. He can pick his destination.

Outside of really unique trades like the Tkachuk trade (which was more of a hockey/cap trade), pending UFAs never get full value.

If Toronto got Cooley or Keller alone for Matthews in that scenario, that would be a good return.

If he wants to go home that badly, he will wait till the summer sign with them then he gets to play with all of these pieces. Makes zero sense

Already sounds like AM34 is interested in seeing what FA looks like at the end of this season. Home is always an option, but I have a feeling that Matthews is more interested in the bag than anything else. There are endorsements and media opportunities in Toronto. Some would stay with the player but not all. If AZ wants to make him the highest paid player in the league during FA that becomes something to consider but taking a 13MM contract with Toronto may also have some added value from off ice income.

Prime AM34 in FA will create a feeding frenzy and will give him a ton of options to consider.

Initiating a trade at this point would be foolish for Toronto. Treliving and Doan are not known for being fools. Shanahan on the other hand...
