Description
Since my last one was met with some discourse from hawks fans understandably this might work out better for all parties. This is using the assumption Zaitsev does not have SJS on his 10 team list (probably does or this would've been done already)

Zero reason for pit to retain on petry in this deal, with that said, the hawks would only be interested if pit added a 2nd rounder or remove zaitsev and add a pit 1st rounder. Hawks said they're done making moves unless someone makes it worth their while. The deal you posted isn't remotely close to being worth it.

In that case fine remove the retention add the 2nd deal done :NODDERS:.

The possible agency in moving Murphy would be his offensive skills are very lackluster and soon he will be a 3rd pairing defensive defensemen at best as he gets older. It'll be easier to move him now and maximize return than it would be in say 2 more years when he is 32 himself.

Also I doubt the drop off from Petry is that significant considering even with the injury he had he put up a similar season to 2020-2021 than 2021-2022 with the Pens.

So Hawks should sell on Murphy before he turns 32 and declines but buy on Petry because he won't decline much in his age 36 and age 37 year......uhhh....do you even believe what you are trying to sell? Bottom line is adding Petry for 2 years with Jones/Murphy in place already for 3 more seasons likely forces a subsequent move by the Hawks which they are not doing for free. Yes taking Zaitsev for the first year offsets Petry in year one....but there is nothing in this proposal that has the Hawks taking a player they don't need or have a lineup spot for for free that comes with a 5 million price tag for year 2. They took Zaitsev for a year because they got a 2nd & a 4th to have a grossly overpaid 3rd pairing D. You can argue that Petry is a 2nd pairing D and better than Murphy or what ever arguement you want to try to make, but the fact is adding Petry means you have a 3rd pairing RHD making 4.4-5 million in year 2 which the Hawks are not doing for free.

Yes, I believe what I'm trying to sell in that Petry's style of play is more valuable at 5 mil at ages 36-37 than what Murphy's is at 32 an 4.4 mil. Petry is still able to provide solid contribution on the offensive side while providing steady defensive style which allows him to be utilized on 2nd pair d, 1st or 2nd PP unit, and 1st or 2nd PK. Murphy's best utilization is as 2nd/3rd pair defensive D and PK lines. Which is why when it comes to resell value even with the 15 team NTC Petry has value to a contending team in which you could flip at deadline for valued picks at the 5 mil tag.

Additionally, Petry's value doesn't fall off a cliff at his current cap hit it's probably about on par with Murphy's current value. With that in mind Pens would be more than fine trading Petry for Zaitsev straight up no retention and adding in the '24 2nd rd pick. Which has been mentioned several times by me.

We'll agree to disagree on Murphy falling off by age 32 and Petry not having a bigger risk of a fall off in ager 36/37.

I do agree taking out retention and doing Zaitsev for Petry and a 2nd would be much more interesting (and likely) for the Hawks.

Pure defensive defensemen fall off faster than those who have offensive capabilities, except in extremely rare circumstances. See Brian Dumoulin for example of this age 31 and fell off a cliff.
