Pushing for a Wild Card Playoff Spot

Created by: batman
Team: 2023-24 Nashville Predators
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 1, 2023
Published: Aug. 1, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Taking on Granlund's Contract Since the Penguins need cap space for Erik Karlsson. For the 5M cap dump, Samuel Poulin and a 2nd round pick is fair knowing the Habs got an 1st for taking on Monahan's 6M. The Predators are in a situation where they need to do this types of trades. Granlund can bounce back and he can still produce.

There are too many forwards in Montreal. Kent Hughes is ready to give away for free Mike Hofmann but he doesn't want to pay to get rid of him. We will take him at 50% retained.

Overpaying Kane to convince him signing in Nashville.

Ron Hextall masterclass on Granlund pay a 2nd rounder for him to come and not help us make the playoffs to having to offload his hit the following year somehow....... I don't think this is the way though.

NSH is in a situation where they need to help out other teams, by taking bad contracts off their hands? Slotting Granlund in as their #1 center makes NSH worse, not better.

No thanks on Kane. Too much term and money. Trotz is also pretty adamant that he's only got guys with the right attitude on his team. Pretty sure Kane doesn't fit the bill.

He scored 20 goals 4 seasons ago. He fell off a cliff. I mean, good though, we don't want him

He had 14 goals and 37 points in 67 games, that's on pace for 20

When was the last time Hoffman was a 20 goal scorer? Three years and two teams ago?

Pens laugh and hang up. It would be one thing if Granlund’s buyout was bad and was an atrocious player. But he’s not. He’s just a bit overpaid and his buyout is like nothing.

Hughes is trying to sell Hoffman for free w/o retention. If you want retention, that is gonna cost something

The only deals I can see Nashville making is the deals Arizona was making. Taking on bad contracts and acquiring Prospects and Picks for nothing. It's exactly what i did with the Granlund and Hoffman trades. Instead of doing a proper rebuild this offseason, Barry Trotz decided to fill the holes in the roster by free agency, that's not how it works, you can't compete without building a young solid core. Barry Trotz offered Gustav Nyquist and O'Reilly and Luke Schenn contracts like they were contending. Like every year, the Predators are going to push for that Wild Card spot and get out of the 1st round by Colorado. Ruining the 1st round pick spot. Instead of being in the Top 10 they are going to draft in the Top 16-17.

No one is going to Pay for Hoffman with retention or not. No one wants him. The only way he gets traded is if the Habs retain 50%.

The thing that you are missing about NSH is that they do have somewhat of a young core already built. Glass, Parssinen, Tomasino, and Evangalista are all but guaranteed to make the team this year in addition to Novak with several young pieces coming up likely in the next year or two (Askarov, Svchekov, L'Heuruex, and Kemell to name a few). All of these guys are 26 or under (24 or under if exclude Novak). Trotz is already on record stating that he offered Nyquist, ROR, and Schenn their deals to change the locker room around to be more about developing the young pieces while not being bottom tier and wasting Saros because Saros is the only reason NSH is fighting for a playoff spot now. Unfortunately, no one is willing to give NSH what they want for Saros in order for them to initiate a process of blowing it all up and make moves like what AZ was doing. As long as NSH has Saros they can at least compete for playoffs, its just a matter of if Saros drags them there kicking and screaming or not.

While I agree with you that NSH should be aiming to be worse this year in order to get better picks, they aren't so far out as to need to resign themselves to the dumpster for the next 4-5 years in order to get top picks and hope to compete in 6-7 years like AZ is doing or COL did in the past. Does NSH have any elite stars? Outside of Askarov, no not really, but NSH has most of the pieces at this point. The only real piece NSH is missing is a 1C that they could build around, and it is why NSH was willing to move Askarov+ for 4OA or 5OA at the draft. Take a line up of these young players and put Will Smith or another top center from the 23 draft like Dvorsky in it and suddenly the team looks a good bit stronger in 2-3 years time without needing to take on bad contracts for years. If NSH can acquire a genuine 1C they could build around like Matthew Savoie or even someone already in the NHL like Byfield then the team has the current pipeline to maintain that for a number of years.

      When did the season become 96 games? 14/67 = 0.2089 x 82 = 17. I guess that rounds to 20.

Either way - playing granlund in the top 6 just takes icetime from younger developing players. His 5v5 production is terrible so if you really want him, play him 4th line and load him up on powerplay minutes.

can't ignore 30+pts on last year's team and his entire NHL career. There's at least a 5th at 50%.

Since Trotz became GM he's gone to great pains to get rid of bad contracts (buying out Duchene, trading Johansen at 50% retention), so no - taking bad contracts is the opposite of what he wants to do.

I assume those are more attitude based like you mentioned. He is one year off a 60+ point season with the Preds.
