every year at least one rental is moved for too much, and foligno fits the same category as a lot of the "Grit, do it all wingers" that is moved for a pricier tag. He fits Carolina's system well enough that I could see them not being frugal for once. (I also don't think Coghlan is worth much, I value him at a 5th) Honestly I could see a team throwing a late first at marcus.

Two problems with this.

Carolina avoid rentals like the plague.

When was the last time the Canes gave up too many assets for a player in a deal?

Coghlan will return a 3rd/4th. Top 6 RHD that's 25? Yeah, that's valuable even if the player has struggles

I know carolina is very frugal come TDL, but with a surplus 2nd there is reason to believe they will use it. Maybe they go a bit bigger, focusing on skill instead. We both know Foligno is a RBA type player and would fit like a glove on the roster. After multiple years stopped at the conference finals, there is reason to believe that a slight, but not massive, splurge would be a bit more realistic than years past. Foligno is built for the playoffs and would absolutely do well for the team. Since you're higher on Coghlan than myself (and likely minnesota), I'd move him just for the late 2nd.

On a forward that may not make the Canes roster? Definitely not. Maybe for a scoring middle six winger.

Carolina made big changes. They added Bunting, they added Orlov, they're effectively adding Svechnikov, and Teravainen is getting to play without the broken wrist.... Foligno is maybe worth a late 3rd half retained.

What he is worth and what he will get are two different things. GMs value players like this too much. If carolina is unwilling to spend, fair enough, but someone else almost certainly will.

Gostisbehere, Domi, Hakanpaa, Vatanen, Paquette, those are notable rentals from the past 4 years.

Hell, Patches was a rental too.

They don't avoid rentals, they avoid paying 1sts for rentals.

Paquette was acquired way before the deadline, and that was not a move for Paquette so much as it was to move Dzingel. They got Galchenuyk in that deal too you'll remember. Vatanen they got because everyone was hurt, Hakanpaa they got trying to find Fleury a new home. Ghost and Domi are the two exceptions. They got Max for nothing. They avoid rentals. Look at the other additions they've done in that time. Puljujarvi (who was an RFA, I remind you), Burns, Niederreiter, etc. They've always tried to go after players with term. This management group hates rentals.

Yeah, and Galchenyuk got flipped to Toronto for literally nothing.

Vatanen was hurt when they traded for him. Hakanpaa was traded to get grit, Fleury was just dead weight and needed to be dangled for any sort of value.

Note how all the players I mentioned here never resigned with the Canes the following year? Because they were rentals. There's no discounting the longer contracts that DW traded for and made spades on them. It's the fact that they're not avoiding rentals, they just don't give out 1sts for rentals that they know they're not going to go all in on signing next year.

They got a minor leaguer and Korshkov, who was used to get Domi.

They picked up Vatanen, Hakanpaa, Domi and Ghost as rentals. In 5 years. This team avoids rentals. Look at who they're being linked with. Erik Karlsson? 4 years left. Pesce's deal expiring? Rumor mill. Teravainen's deal expiring? Rumor mill. Skjei's deal expiring? Rumor mill! This team avoids players on expiring deals. They do, Waddell's never hidden that. He frequently admits it. Dundon doesn't like the idea. They picked up Vatanen because EVERYONE was hurt. Pesce, Hamilton both had long term issues, Edmundson wasn't right, and they had to do something. Hakanpaa was trying to find Haydn Fleury a good home.

The two times they've had the choice and did it anyway are the last 2 years... the 2 years the East became a complete arms race at the deadline with Meier, Kane, Tarasenko, Orlov, O'Reilly, Bertuzzi, Horvat, all ending up in the East they pick up Ghost for a future 3rd. Remember, they didn't *want* Ghost, they were going after Timo Meier. They like term, they avoid rentals.

Canes should do that all day. Cogs isn’t an nhl player. Do a second for Foligno with retention is a no brainer.

Not one team in this league is paying the 3rd or 4th price Caniac think he carries. That's an obvious no brainer.

So, we going to act like he was not a regular part of the Knights top six? Or that he's better than Chatfield?

I don’t dislike getting Zucc back, but I think Nill will be looking for a dman at the deadline. Could be wrong. Nils may be ready for playoff hockey by then
