Would Vancouver Be Better Off

Created by: DevilsFanZack13

Initial Creation Date: Aug. 7, 2023

Description
I know Hronek is a top 4 in the league, but would Vancouver be better off with drafting Sandin Pellikka and using the 2023 2nd round pick to draft someone? I know Vancouver doesn't want to rebuild but I think a top 4 of Hughes, Willander and Sandin Pellikka would be pretty solid. Let me know what you guys think.

Vancouver would be better off with Hronek imo, especially since they nabbed Brzustewicz in the 3rd round

Yzerman hangs up.

Oh my bad. This isn't a trade.

I think they are better off with Hronek because of their window. Pelikka is years away from being an impact, upcoming season in SHL, next AHL, and maybe NHL after that.

I think the Canucks are better off with Hronek. We’ve needed a top 4 caliber RHD for years, and he fits into the age of our core with Pettersson and Hughes

I thought it was a bad trade for the Canucks to Hronek. Save the picks and spend 4.4m on a UFA.

I personally think Hronek will do well in VAN. He was great last year and is still at a decent age.

No Hronek-calibre defenceman can be had for 4.4M. And the free agent class this year was pretty terrible to spend money on anyways

Hronek is a pending RFA, not UFA

Not only that, but I don't see anything about Axel Sandin-Pelikka to convince me that he is anything more than a Tyson Barrie type player, so if that's what he pans out to be, he would create a harmful redundancy on the back end with Quinn Hughes already there, even though Hughes defends much better than Barrie

Definitely better with Hronek, even if he isn't as productive offensively next season, and even taking projected timelines out of it, he definitely helps to create a more balanced back end than Sandin-Pelikka would. Canucks probably take Colby Barlow with pick no. 17, and as nice of an addition he'd theoretically be, wingers can only earn so much credence with regard to the organization's on-ice personnel priorities since the team is already exceptionally deep at wing already

Thet's a good point. But the Canucks are likely dot finish out of the playoffs with Hronek at 4.4m, now his contract is up next summer, and let's say he gets paid 6m.
Now could they have found a 6m Dman and kept the picks? :That's always the issue when trading picks is the pick going to be cost efficient NHLer on his 1m ELC.?

Pair Hronek with a defensively minded partner and he will be fine. Personally I wouldn't change it I'm excited to see ASP play.

He has never excelled defensively but he tries to be responsible defensively. With a partner who isn't strong defensively he won't take as many chances. He was paired with Maatta for a good portion of last season and Hronek had his best season offensively and Maatta made him look pretty good defensively.

$6M is like a Pesce/Hanifin/Forsling/Skjei type of defenceman. But you make a good point on keeping the picks but not having a 100% chance you sign those guys, or guaranteeing a Hronek with RFA rights for the picks.

Personally I’m fine with the trade, the Canucks want to compete next season, so acquiring Hronek accomplishes that.

Canucks are not LIKELY to miss the playoffs, they're at worst a coin flip. Hronek is also a pending RFA, not a pending UFA, and ELC's don't last forever, and furthermore, are rarely capitalized on while they are in effect for core players

I think Hanifin and Forsling are pretty comfortably 6+M dollar defenders, but I go back and fourth on whether or not Pesce and Skjei are as well, definitely 5+M in terms of market value, not to mention the cap being expected to take it's first big jump since the pandemic

I don't think anybody was ever under the impression that Hronek is Brett Pesce or Chris Tanev, and yeah, he ideally shouldn't be the one carrying the bulk of the defensive load on a 1st or 2nd pair, but he also doesn't leave it to his partner to literally have his back ever second they're out on the ice
