Description
First off, I like Petry a lot. I think if you put him next to Kovacevic or Barron today, he's by far the better defensemen. That being said, I think the Habs should trade him for whatever they can get before the season starts.

Here's my reasoning:

1) I don't think he wants to be in Montreal and that taints the experience for players who are excited to be here.

2) Harris, Barron, Xhekaj, and Kovacevic need ice time to establish themselves as NHL regulars. It's no secret that 2 of those 4 will need to be traded in 1-2 years to make room for the Hutson/Reinbacher/Mailloux/Engstroms of the world. If they play and play well, they can bring back a better return than a 36 year old Petry next offseason.

3) at 35 years old, Perry's value will only decline from here. Let's not pull another Edmundson. Get what we can before it's too late.

4) Edit: You don't have to be the clear winner in every deal. We already came out on top with Petry 25% retained & 2nd for Hoffman. This would make it a 2nd, 3rd, 7th, for Hoffman and 2.34M cap relief for 2 years. That's just fine.

There are some teams who might be willing to trade a 2nd for him at 2.34M - but I would be happy with roster space plus an Edmundson-like return.

Adams acknowledged that he's not a fan of a 3-goalie system or repeating what they did in goal last season. Training camp will decide what Comrie's (or UPL's) fates will be.

We’ll see
I don’t think he’s gonna waive UPL & have him get picked up

good post, defensemen become more popular around the deadline. I don't think it's out of the question to get a late 1st for him with retention. Depends on who's on the market at that time.

No way he gets a first. Patrick Kane didn't get a first!

I agree with the reasoning to trade Petry. He just doesn’t fit with the teams competitive timeline, would take play time away from youth.

But simply in regards of salary retention (Edmundson 1 year of retention just under $2mil, with Petry it would be just under $5mil over 2 years), you should get more for Petry. I’m not expecting a 1st or anything, but it should be more than a 3rd + 7th.
That’s not even considering Petry plays a more offensive style at a more desirable side on defence (RD).

My expectation is that he gets something around a 2nd + 4th in terms of value if the Habs retain 50%.

I see the Wild and Toronto as a better fit than Buffalo for Petry’s services.

Appreciate your perspective sir. Petry is also age 35-36 through this deal. Edmundson was age 30...

I know age is relative, but there are simply things Petry won't do like blocking shots, getting involved in scrums. Edmundson is more of a playoff warrior. Petry is a regular season guy.

He won't - odds are that Comrie is the one to be waived.
