This is a really pointless trade for the Canes and Don Waddel, and Briere got a really good prospect out of this. Rizzo in Denver has just kept getting better and more has become a dominant presence in the NCAA. I can see a world where Rizzo never works out at the NHL level, but I see another really high chance of him becoming a solid middle-six forward playmaker. For me I see this is a compensation for TDA, and is a really pointless trade......gotta hope Kase makes the roster I guess????, fleece by Philly.

Adding the draft pick is unnecessary.

The Flyers win the trade.

Briere rizzed the canes.

This trade is definitely part the DeAngelo trade discussion that they had earlier in the offseason. Canes get TDA for 1.675 mil instead of 2.5 mil if Philly would have retained 50%, but instead Philly boughtout TDA allowing Canes to get him for Cheaper and Philly still gets a return for TDA

This is Don Waddell doing the Flyers a favor imo. Adds context to why Flyers bought out DeAngelo instead of trading him for rizzo like originally thought.

Instead Carolina got him at a cheaper AAV. If I had to guess this was agreed upon when that happened.

There's a really good chance none of these players play again in the NHL.

Flyers get a decent prospect and a pick for nothing.

Not used to the Flyers getting an unnecessary draft pick instead of giving one up. Nice deal by Briere.

Wondering how exactly this happened? I understand this was the trade rumored before the NHL shot it down and all that. But what I'm wondering is why Carolina seems ok giving this guy up for essentially nothing? I've seen a few people saying he wasn't interested in signing in Carolina which seems at least a little strange to me. Is it possibly the other way around? And he wants to sign right now but Carolina is not interested? I guess we'll see if Briere signs him?

Shocked Kase got anything at all. The thing about the Canes is that they are extremely smart, so the fact they were alright with trading this much shows a lot about their belief in Kase. 20 goal season inbound

Rizzo is actually good though. Getting him and a pick was tidy from Briere. My guess is that this is residual stuff from the TDA trade

For anyone wondering, this isn't the Kase (at least as Capfriendly lists him) that has played on Anaheim, Boston, Toronto, and others.

This is a drafted player that never worked out in Philly.

You're talking about Ondrej Kase. He is David's brother. Carolina signed Ondrej last year, but he played only one game for them, then was out for the season with a concussion. Too bad because I thought he looked pretty good early in his career in Anaheim. I don't know if this has anything to do with them trading for David. I think Ondrej is planning to play in Czechia this season, where David has been since his entry-level with Philadelphia contract ran out.

This trade doesn’t seem to make any sense for Carolina. Rizzo looks like a pretty good prospect despite being picked 2nd-last in the draft, and Carolina still had two more years to sign him before they’d have lost his rights. Kase’s chance to make the NHL seems to have come and gone. If Carolina had no interest in Rizzo, I could see them doing him a favor by sending him to a team that will give him a chance, but they shouldn’t have had to include a draft pick for that. It’s only a 5th-rounder, but if a pick was included, it seems that it should have gone the other way.

The people who are saying that this is somehow tied to DeAngelo probably have it right. “If you buy him out and he signs with us, we’ll give you a late-round pick and prospect.” If you can trade for future considerations then there must be such a thing as past considerations too, even if it's not announced that way. That’s the only explanation that makes sense to me.

Ondrej was a very good player. It's unfortunate he's had so many head injuries but at some point you have to prioritize your health over the game you love.

He was an amazing player and played his role very well with every team he played with. He could've been that huge underrated difference maker come playoff time.

I really need this Massimo guy to become something just so they will add our last name in Chel. Nothing more irritable then having the announcer say Ross bc Rizzo wasnt there for the taking.

Sighhh.... I digress, thank you for coming to today's Ted Talk.
