Interesting. I couldn't think of anything less than Lindstrom to offer. Are you suggesting that Montreal should pay us for taking Petry?

I know Detroit doesn't need Petry. But Lindstrom is barely NHL level. I was actually surprised Yzerman re-signed him. Maybe it's because he's a righty?

maybe we can retain Petry's salary and you add a 3rd from Detroit?

But the 2 previous seasons he played really well so the tools are all there. Then there is an 11 year age difference.

Ok but do you really believe Lindstrom will be more than he currently is? A fringe 6/7 NHL D? Given his age and progression? The only thing he really has going for him is his dirt cheap AAV and that he's a righty. Ok so that's 2 things.

May I ask what's the hurry to move Petry? Personally I think giving up assets to move Petry is hand fisted.

Honestly I think he could be a good 3rd pair Dman. He has a lot of composure for a young defender. He won't try to force a pass and if the pass isn't there he has no problem eating the puck.

That's essentially what Lindstrom is when he's playing well. A steady, stay at home D who you barely notice. In his case, that's a good thing. But I haven't seen that guy in a while.

Maybe Yzerman just needs a spot filler until his young D are NHL ready? Better to play them big minutes in Grand Rapids than sitting in the owners box like Lindstrom will be doing most games.

Do you believe Petry's value would be higher now or at the trade deadline? A half retained Petry might be attractive for a playoff contender.

You're risking injury if you keep him until the trade deadline. You can say this for any player. But Petry will be 36 at the trade deadline.

I'd rather move him now. We don't want him to take a youngster spot on our lineup

Why are you sp intent on getting Petry?

He is not going to help Detroit win a cup, he'll be retired long before that is going to happen. The only thing Petry will do for Detroit is cost us 9 million in cap that we could much rather use to resign Seider, Raymond, Rasmussen, Johansson, and Berggren. What if Perron would like to stay another year, he'd be a much better player to spend cap on than Petry. Or what if Sprong keeps his scoring up? Are we going to drop him just because all our cap is tied up in a 36 year old defender? We have Tuomisto, Sandin Pellikka, Johansson, and Gibson as RD prospects that are going to be the players that, together with Seider, are going to be the right side defenders that we are going to win a cup with, Petry isn't in those plans and he doesn't help this team achieve that goal.

We already have 7 defenders on the team (8 if you count McIsaac). Lindström is the obvious choice for our #7 to sit in the press box. If you trade him away for Petry you will have to sit one of the others. Are you going to sit Gostisbehere? Or Petry? or Määttä, our best defensive defender last season? Or Chiarot, who have three years left on his contract? That'll raise his trade value. Or are you going to sit Holl, who we just signed to a three year deal? That will sure make all future free agents take notice.

Montreal like Detroit will be precipitating in the draft lottery at the end of the season. Giving up assets to move a player that will be gone before Montreal's next trip to the playoffs would be awful roster management. Especially when the player you're trying to get rid of is your best RHD. The reason Hughes made this trade was to build up draft capitol and he's not going to turn around and throw it away to get rid of Petry.

I made made 1 ACGM because Petry to Detroit is trending. It's not like I go to sleep at night in my Petry jammies.

If you look at my lines you'll see that I put Chiarot up front, a role I think he is better suited for and frees up a spot for Edvinsson on the left side.

Holl did just sign a 3 year deal but if I've learned anything from a lifetime of being a Wings fan it's that injuries will happen early and often. Having a veteran who can step up in the position that we have the least organizational depth is a good thing, not a bad one.

Petry is not our best d to be. We want ice time for the youngster so we are hardly shopping him at the moment.

yeah - but I believe we discussed that possibility!

I guess we can say well done to @ItsAlwaysSunnyInDetroit

I am happy for Petry that he is finally home !

Not sure what this means for our defensive prospects, but curious nonetheless.
