Hughes might as well keep Petry for this return.

So, what’s in it for MTL?

Also, 2 teams retaining salary for the same contract duration is highly unlikely.. just have one of the teams retaining a little less as those retention spots are valuable…

Seems like too much for Petry. The prospect is a 2nd rounder from 2021 and looking good.

I'd think Faksa OR Hakanpaa and a 3rd might work, and a lesser piece.

I just dont think that Petry at his age with 2 yrs left has oodles of value. Faksa with 2 yrs left at 3.25mil is a solid defensive pivot, and its debateable, but I think superior to Dvorak. Faksa, a 3rd and 5th (or midlevel prospect) for Petry with no retention seems pretty fair.

PIT just treated Petry as a cap dump, I dont think his value has sky rocketed since then, I think his value has increased a tad ONLY based on the fact that his cap hit is lower.

I don’t know a lot about DAL prospects, but 17 pts in 60 games in the OHL is not good. The playoffs were good, but he’s not screaming NHLer… Plus LDs for MTL are not wanted looking at our depth

He showed little progression from one year to the next in the OHL. Not promising at all. Still can recover, but if you follow promising prospects, they usually show improvement year to year.

I don't know much about Grushnikov but a quick search seems to show he's not a lights out prospect either. Is he like some super defensive dman prospect or something? I know nothing of this kid but 17 pts in the OHL as a dman in his D+2 season seems, on the surface, majorly disappointing for a 2nd rounder.

As for the last part of your assessment, price has just about everything to do with it. Mitch Marner at 20M cap hit is a negative asset despite being a really good player. Mitch Marner at 1M cap hit is one of the most valuable assets in the league. So cap hit vs production is everything.

Petry was only dumped in order to facilitate the EK trade. He would have been added to the SJS deal if it weren't for Petry's NTC. No team wants him at his full cost even for free. At full price, Petry is a negative asset only but as you remove cap, he becomes more valuable to a point where a team would have to pay to get him. That sweet spot is up for debate sure but there is a sweet spot in which Petry is a positive asset again. Judging by whats on the market right now and the fact that despite everyone crapping on Petry, he still finished with 0.5PPG and plays top 4 minutes. He hasn't slowed down either with age which is why even at his age he's not finished. He certainly had a down year based on his price tag of 6.25M but at 2.3M? 0.5 PPG and playing 22 mins a night all of sudden is pretty darn good.

IDK if its fair value or not, but its frankly not worth the effort for Montreal.

For sure, no sure thing for NHL, but hes a stay at home defenseman in his second year in North America, so his pts are probably not the judge of his talent. Considering the type of game he plays, he put up so few pts in his 1st year in North America and finished +33 is pretty good (albeit +/- isnt the only measure). (consider the Oloffsson from BUF finished with almost 50 pts and finished a -27, and you have to question how valuable those 40+ pts were.) Hes a solid stay at home prospect learning the NA game in the NA rink, but if you want a pt producer he isn;t it.

And I get that Petry's cap hit at 50% is awesome value for cap hit on production ABILITY, but it really depends on his age/health and wanting him for TWO years. DAL already has Suter back there and the type of game they play is more suited to a Hakanpaa than a Petry. I just dont think DAL gives up 2 roster players, a 2nd rounder whos doing fine, offers retention, and a 3rd.

Suter and Petry as a pairing doesn’t sound good.
