This is for 24-25. Kings should be fine next season with out Arvi and Roy, and this is certainly an upgrade on Talbot/Copley.

It looks like this trade takes place in 24-25 season so next season. Which the Kings will have cap space.

However I think you and I can both agree the Kings will target a #1 tender in free agency before trading away any assets to get a #1.

I expect Roy to be extended before this season starts.

Portillo is the plan for 2024-25.

I'm not convinced that Ullmark is anything better than an average goaltender that played for an historically exceptional team last season.

That's an asinine take. Please explain your reasoning to me. If you don't want to put him in the elite tier, fine. But he's absolutely in that top 6-12 range for goalies

I've seen people say this, but he's going to play behind the same defensemen he did for 85% of the season with an arguably better 3RD. He might not win the Vezina again, but he'll still be a very good 1A.

He's had a career .919 save % over 207 games, most of which was on a very bad Buffalo team.

Portillo? lol. You don't throw a young goaltender one season removed from college into an NHL starting job or workload. You ease them in as backup for at least a year if not two. Portillo's your B goalie, but LA absolutely needs an A goalie and Ullmark is easily better than anything that will be available on FA next offseason (unless somehow Hellebuyck makes it to UFA, which I highly doubt).

Goaltenders are a product of the team they play for. Take a quality goaltender and remove him from the team where he had success, and he's more often than not going to be unable to consistently reproduce that success.

Show me a goaltender that was a top 6-12 goaltender on multiple teams in the last 20 years. You can count them on one hand. Before this season, Ullmark was on no one's radar to even be in the top half of starting goaltenders in the league.

I think Ullmark can still be good playing for Boston. He won't be a Vezina candidate again, but he can still be a quality starter for them.

Move him to a different team and I'm not sure that's true any longer.

Fair enough, but I'm not seeing any names on this UFA list I'd rather have over Ullmark for the rest of his current deal. And summer 2025 has some VERY intriguing UFA goalie possibilities.

https://www.quanthockey.com/nhl/records/nhl-active-goalies-all-time-save-percentage-leaders.html
among active nhl goalies
tied #1 in sv % (again mostly on a bad BUF team)
tied #3 in GAA
#26 in Wins (bad look, but again, he was on Buffalo, and this list includes MAF, i'll give him some slack on this)
#45 in shutouts (not a great look for him)

https://www.spotrac.com/nhl/free-agents/2024/goaltender/rfa/
2025 goalie UFA class has 40 goalies currently listed
Hellebuyck - doubtful he makes it, but would be clear #1
Samsonov - idk how Leafs let him go, so i think he reaches a deal 1st
Mrazek, Comrie, Murray, MAF, Driedger, Francouz, DeSmith? i'd argue MAF, but you'd be insane to say the rest rank above him
RFA - Hart, Swayman, both the only others to consider and they're not going anywhere without a trade

Turcotte at best (and i really like him) is probably a 2C now. I think he's been stunted by injuries etc and not sure he's really a 2C. That 2nd pick should be between 54-64 again.
I think this is too little return, especially considering Turcotte is basically expendable with how deep LA prospect pool is

Both teams should keep what they already have then and everyone will be happy.
