Getting pinto signed

Created by: Jakebk
Team: 2023-24 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 10, 2023
Published: Aug. 12, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Jack Mcbain added from Arizona sending them a roster player, a former first round pick and some sweeteners to eat the salary. He will provide some snarl and some depth scoring. I really like this player. I’m sure Arizona does as well. Hard sell but a second and third along with Lassi’s upside might get this done.

The sens really need the cap flexibility to sign Sandersen next year and fill out the roster. So we’re sending Artem Zub away his great contract to Vancouver who needs quality players if they want to keep any of their talent. Tyler Meyers is sadly not the same quality of player but with the emergence of kleven, branny and JBD I think the defence is deep enough to absorb the hit.

As for the San Jose trade I think expiring contract for expiring contract with a 2nd gets it done. They can flip kubalik for another pick at the deadline likely and the sens get a player back at the same price with a little more 2 way element to his game.

These moves allow the sens to sign pinto and sokolov. This team becomes deeper up front with a fourth line that will be a menace to play against. We also add picks so that this team can replenish the pool after all the recent graduates to contend in the future.

Let me know what you think

1st trade -
Ottawa already had plenty of snarl with Tkachuk, Pinto, Kastelic, MacEwen and Imama. This trade, although dropping Joseph, is kind of a waste.

2nd trade -
Ottawa hasn't even seen Kubalik play. It makes zero sense go trade him for an expiring contract.

3rd trade -
No. There's plenty of cap room to sign Sanderson to an 8x8 with the cap going up and buyouts coming off the books. This is just a stupid trade.

Sometomes the easiest solution is the best. Trade Joseph and a 2nd foe FC and sign Pinto. Problems solved.

There's 5M in dead cap coming off the books next year and the cap expected to go up by 4M. That's enough to sign Sanderson without making our defense much, much worse.

I expect Brannstrom to be gone before the 24-25 season (he has no room on this team) and replaced with Kleven. I expect Greig to be a full timer too in 24-25, maybe one or two other prospects, meaning Kubalik or Tarasenko, or both, are probably gone. That frees up enough for do some bottom 6 fixing.

Dont see AZ trading away McBain for that haul, they have more than enough picks, the D prospect is nice, joseph is bottom 6 W (AZ has a ton of them), McBain is 23yo C (the weakest position for AZ) who as rookie was #4 in hits in the league

That sharks one is a total head scratcher.
As a SJ fan I feel it’s a great deal as a Ottawa fan at first I think I would hate it, but at the same time Barabanov would probably put up 15-18 goals 45-60 assists on a line with Giroux and Norris.
Both cost the same.
I just don’t think in the end Ottawa should do this.

1- Really bad for Ottawa. Yes they save 1.35 in AAV but they downgrade Joseph to McBain at the cost of 2 valuable picks and a former 1st round pick who is still a good prospect

2- Barabanov had a productive season but Kubalik is better, waste of a 2nd round pick for what is a downgrade

3- This trade recovers some of the picks wasted in the first 2 trades but Myers is a really big downgrade on Zub.

Overall, it just makes Ottawa worse while downgrading their picks...

Or even easier, trade Kubalik for a pick instead of squandering one. Kubalik is a guy that'd need PP time and it will already be really hard to share...

I would love it if he was. I hope they don't force it if he's not. I rather he get top lines minutes in Belleville than playing like 7-10 mins here on a 4th line. He has too much potential to stunt his development.

He won’t play on the 4th line. He’s a lock for the top 9

I really doubt it, they rave about McBain. They have 34 picks (most in first 3 rounds) in next 3 years (had 12 this draft) so the picks arent that bid a deal. Joseph is older and cost more, plays W (not a need) and his best year points is barely above McBain rookie year. more look at it AZ easy pass.

Joseph is only 3 years older, makes 1.35 AAV more... In 2021-22, Joseph had 30 pts in only 69 games, all these pts were at ES or PK

I agree that McBain has more value than Joseph because of contract, age, etc but Thomson (1st in 2019, still a good prospect) + 2nd + 3rd is way too much for that difference.

This trade wouldn't happen because like you said Arizona has so many picks, they'd need a serious reason to make that move and Ottawa wouldn't want to pay that price.

People are looking for complicated solutions when it should be really simple :

- Trade Kubalik for a pick (2nd?)

- Trade Brannstrom for a young forward like McBain (but a Winger)

- Sign Pinto to a 1 year bridge deal

- Kleven comes in and replaces Brannstrom

- Forward group is nice and toasty (let's say for example the young forward acquired for Brannstrom was McBain :

Tkachuk - Stutzle - Tarasenko
Joseph - Norris - Batherson
Greig - Pinto - Giroux
McBain - Kastelic - MacEwen

I wasnt saying Joseph sucks but last year 18pts 56g (26 in 82), the year before you mention, 19p 56g (28 in 82), 7p 37g (NHL) (16p in 82) - 4 years of good numbers also lots of missed games, kind of looks like his ceiling is hit, solid 3rd line W.
AZ is high on McBain so for them to part w with think going to have to be a good overpay, dont see this as that.

Admittedly, I don't know how high you guys are on McBain, I'm thinking bottom-6 Center but if you see more I can understand

he is 3/4 C, stud on PK and lead F in hits as rookie (4th in league overall) decent in circle and is 23yo. with so many young small skill guys he has lots of intangible value. in interviews he just sounds like real good guy and is well liked in locker room. Last year as 4C had kassian and obrien on W for 60 games had something like 12 pts then moved after TDL to crouse and maccelli W and had around 14 pts in 20 games, so ho knows his ceiling maybe 30s.

I could see this trade happening, and Artem Zub is younger and much quicker than Myers.
What do you guys think?
