Petry

Created by: Campabee
Team: 2023-24 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 12, 2023
Published: Aug. 12, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
To all those trying to acquire Petry

1. Petry has stated he will play for the Habs if a trade doesn't happen prior to the season.
2. Montreal doesn't have cap issues, like at all. I have heard this on several ACGM's this week that they do but their current cap projection is with a 26 man roster carrying 3 goalies.
3. Petry at 6.25 mil was pretty close to unmovable and yes Pittsburgh had to retain and the Sharks had to take Hoffman but he was an add on in the deal similar to Tatar for Patches. He was not used as a cap dump but a cap offset, there is a huge distinction between the two.
4. Petry finished the season in the top 60 in scoring among all NHL D men and 28th among RHD, his advanced stats to finish the year were top pairing level as well.
5. If you expect Montreal to retain or take back a contract you can expect it to cost anywhere from 2 2nds to a 1st and 2nd (probably with conditions on the 1st)
6. Montreal is happy to keep Petry since he would slot everyone back to their ideal seats on the right side of the D.

Long story short, you aren't getting a top 4 RHD with a cap hit of less than 2.5 mil for peanuts, especially when he just finished in the top 64 in scoring.

Lineup is opening night with Dvo injured to start the season

Nice of Petry to agree to play for Habs. If he doesn't report he doesn't get paid.. So let's not think he's doing the Habs a favour by fulfilling his contract. He can always retire.

I know Habs are leaning hard on the "we'll just keep him" thing but realistically, that notion is mostly just for show. The goal here is that they move him. Not keep him. The sense is that he'll be a good boy and report for camp if push comes to shove but I can't fathom a scenario where he and the family are ecstatic about coming back to MTL. Not sure MTL really wants him either. His addition makes Barron, Guhle, Harris and Xhekaj all get less minutes as a result and not too mention Habs will have to waive Kovacevic probably.

Yes, if the Habs had to pay to move him, then yeah they'll just keep him obviously but if a fair deal is on the table, Hughes is moving him and that is 100% without a doubt not going to be a 1st and 2nd or a prospect etc etc etc. Come on now. Pittsburgh could have easily swung a 3 way so they could have got part of the return if that was the case. It was not. Many teams have already filled their RHD spots, Petry has a NTC, and so on. Yes he's a great asset for a team to add but the timing isn't exactly great either. There are only few teams who can make it work. Habs can't be too picky.

But just to play devils advocate though, this silly notion that the Habs will come away with a worse player making more than Petry at 50% while the Habs have to retain also is just beyond obtuse. Habs will get a draft pick, I'd say at absolute best a 2nd rounder but probably like a 3rd and maybe a lesser prospect if we're lucky. The real goal here, will be to not have to take on any bad cap in the trade and to essentially move out 2 players who had no spot on the team any more while accruing assets in the process.

When you look at it, the Habs will have effectively got a sick return for valueless players Hoffman and Pitlick by just retaining an extra year on Petry. That is already such a win its crazy. Expecting more is not realistic or I should say the Hughes will have to get real lucky with a team makes a decision to pay 1st and a 2nd for a soon to be 36 year old Petry. Its not impossible but its very very unlikely. I'd be quite happy with a 3rd to be honest.

Capabee - normally I really agree with your perspective, but the idea of putting the Habs player development plans on hold to maximize the trade value of a 35 year old player just doesn't jive.

This is possibly the last year that Barron & Harris have to prove they are NHL regulars before a bunch of other kids start pushing them out of town. If you don't give them ice time, then you are going to end up sacrificing their trade value to maximize Petry's trade value.

Do you think Petry's value this year will be higher than Harris or Barron's after a great full season?

I didn't say it was the ideal plan just that if Hughes doesn't like the offers he is getting for a top 4 RHD who finished top 60 in scoring among all D men and 28th among RHD, then he will just keep him since our D looks much better with him slotted in than it does without him. If Petry is on the roster then neither Savard or Kovacevic are being played on the top pairing, you tell me what looks better for a team who is looking to be in the playoff picture at seasons end.

Option 1

Guhle-Petry
Matheson-Savard
Xhekaj-Harris
Kovacevic

Option 2

Matheson-Savard
Guhle-Harris
Xhekaj-Barron
Kovacevic

For me Barron is another 3-5 D man similar to Kovacevic, Savard is a great guy to have when the play gets tighter but none of those 3 should sniff the top pairing. At least Petry is capable of top pairing duties.

The point is, we know what Petry can and can't do. It's time to find out about Barron & Harris.

Spoiler Alert: The Habs won't win the cup this year and if somehow they were close, Petry is not the guy to get them over the hump.

If Barron could become Petry one day, but at 25 years old, isn't that worth taking a 3rd for Petry today instead of a 2nd?
