Better or worse than last year

Created by: HShockey
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 12, 2023
Published: Aug. 12, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Dvorak: Can provide a bit of offence, when not producing offensively, can be used in a shutdown role due to his 2-way acumen. Has chemistry with Marner, primary centre who's face-off% is solid (52.5%).

Carrier: Mobile, minute-munching defenceman who is solid defensively, possesses a hard shot but is a bit undersized. Was one of Nashville's best D-man in 21-22 playoffs.

Benoit: Adds an injection of physicality, had 216 hits this past season. Solid 7-8 D-man.
Motte: Provides what Lafferty did at cheaper, is speedy, good on forecheck, and also adds a bit of grit and feistiness.

With this roster, although they dress a 20-man-roster, the Leafs don't have to move a big piece like say a Brodie, Nylander, or McCabe, solidly their defence and improve on offence

Is it better than the team we had in the playoffs?

Avs aren't going to do this for cap reasons. But if the cap wasn't a thing, I'd take away the 3rd and Ottawa 7th and just go 4th and 5th.

This doesn’t really help Montreal even if value is decent. We still carry 2.25M on cap for 2 years minus Lafferty. So realistically it’s only clearing around 1M, and we are take on another roster player at forward which we don’t need. We need to clear roster spots up front.

Two of the main objectives in any habs trade is either A) clearing cap space B) open roster spots for younger players.

This doesn’t really accomplish A and definitely doesn’t accomplish B

Just sit back and watch the chaos of a cap strapped team.

There's a possibility to resell him right away, but it's unrealistic.

Avs have 2.025 million for this year, move someone down and your cap compliant

The Avs are gonna try this crazy strategy this year where they have cap flexibility. Wild stuff, but we'll see if it works for them. Also, we need room for Kovalenko when his KHL season ends.

Really good point, I think opening up spots for youngsters is key to find some diamonds in the rough. However, this deal does open up a T6 spot with Dvorak gone, and MTL should weaponize the cap to maximize returns. With Lafferty, he can play a B6 role and could bring value back at the TDL as some cap strapped team may overpay a bit for cheap depth especially w/some retention maximizing you return, OR you immediately flip him with some retention. Most rebuilding teams WOULD do this, but with guys like Anderson, Monahan, Gallagher, and Armia already taking up spots, would rather open the spot.

At the end of the day, I agree with you, I'd probably elect to opening the roster spot for guys like Ylonen, Heinemen as you never know what you'll find, we saw RPH last season with him finally getting opportunity.
