I think Calgary wins this, they get a former 12th overall right shot D-man along with Lack for what a backup goalie would cost... Since Carolina is retaining 50% of salary its a fair rate for a backup goalie given the market that is there etc. Maybe Lack will get his groove back or give them some insurance in case of injury or whatever else. Carolina might be high on Kanzig who has pretty good size if nothing else. Unless I'm missing something this seems pretty good for the Flames without giving up much to obtain smile.

Calgary has the forward and defensive core to win it all. The rest is up to Mike Smith.

This is why Calgary shoulda made a strong bid for MAF....with him in net, they're core (Fleury, Giordano, Brodie, Hamilton, Hamonic, Monahan, Gaudreau, Backlund, Tkachuk) is enviable. Only thing they lack IMO is an elite right handed shot RW

Yea, I think Smith can play a solid season (915 save percentage), but playoffs? Smith is good, but he's not elite, he's not a franchise goalie at his age.

For sure, the only reason Calgary has been dragged down the past few years is a Lack of good goaltending.

I know right? I'm not sure why they don't play like they're supposed to. Maybe they don't take care of their Budaj's? Even so, they still carry insane Price tags these days

Might be to absorb the cap hit, or to chase something they see in free agency.

This screws up my Cam Ward dreams for Pittsburgh.

Ha, while were making fun of names, am I the only one that thinks Abdelkader sounds like some heavy duty power tool?

My friend seemed to indicate it was a cost savings move. They also had a logjam at RHD (Faulk --> Slavin --> TVR --> Murphy) and felt like they could get Lack off the cap for cheap.

That being said, I still can't figure out a reason why they would care about salary. They were still below the cap floor and have to spend about six million to get there. So maybe they go after Draisatl (9.8-11mil?), Johansen (8-9mil?), or someone else (Thornton/Marleau/Duchene?).

On the other side, Calgary picks up a depth RHD who can probably fill out their third pair more nicely than Bartowski. Obviously they don't think either Kylington or Andersson is ready yet.

trash for trash. Why is there so much talk of this. CGY is buying out Murphy anyway haha. They gave up a ECHL/AHL player and a 6th for a 7th and a backup goalie. Nothing special and I don't think there is a clear winner here.

I don't know guess they couldn't even get a 7th round pick for him... Seems odd since his contract/buyout wasn't really that much. If he had injury issues don't even know if would have counted or if buried him in the minors. Either way for a former 1st round pick he sure seemed to get soured on. They already have Carolina retaining salary so I guess its not really costing them since not paying full part of the Lack contract. Guess its Murphy's Law who did that Quest for Herb song smile.

Doesn't seem to make sense to buy Murphy out after trading for him. He's a 24 yr old, a right handed defense-men, and he has some NHL time.

He's a good minor league player. I'd think it would be better to bring him up from the minors then sign a 27 UFA to do the same.

Yeah I found it really odd myself, think he has injury concussion issues so they probably didn't want to bother with him. Once they got STone guess they felt he wasn't needed... Just surprised they couldn't even flip him for a 7th rounder or future considerations nothing. Guy was like a 1st round pick if remember, a few of these buyouts seemed trivial from teams. Devils on one site barely have any forwards showing on their depth chart its pretty funny... Guess they learned to build a team from McPhee like Vegas overloaded with Defense smile.
