I agree. I am just putting out hypotheticals if it doesn’t happen

That's an awful trade off for the Leafs getting Comtois over Timmins. Leafs need all their Dmen.

I’m curious at how you think they’ll make cap room for that.

From the active roster: next summer the Leafs have the following guys expiring: Nylander, Domi, Bertuzzi, Lafferty, Dylan Gambrell (lol), Brodie, Klingberg, Giordano, both their goalies. And then need to sign Liljegren and Robertson to extensions.

There’s $33.4M in cap space. Let’s say Nylander takes a team friendly deal at $8M. You sign a budget goalie tandem for like… $4M total. That leaves you at $21.4M to replace Bertuzzi, Domi, Lafferty, half your defense, and extend Liljegren and Robertson.

Being super optimistic (and also using round numbers) replace Bertuzzi and Domi on bargain basement deals for $2M each. Lafferty and Robertson for $1M each. That leaves you with $15.4 to replace 4 defensemen, including two top 4 guys.

This is all assuming best case scenarios. Realistically, Nylander will likely want more. Replacing Bertuzzi/Domi will be more expensive than $2M AAV each. A $4M tandem would be one of the cheapest in the league.

Imo, you’d probably need to let Nylander walk or move Tavares.

It won’t be that hard, cap is going up by $4-5M; Knies move up to top 6 so arguably one of Domi or Bert move on. Lots of space to re-sign RFAs, Sammy (or other goalie) + a FA dman, preferably to play with Reilly. Leafs are reasonably well setup moving forward, cap wise

The numbers I included have the cap going up by $4M. Even if you assume that Knies and his ELC are 1-1 able to replace production from Bertuzzi and Knies doesn’t hit any performance bonuses, you’re still needing to replace a a top 6 forward (Domi) and two bottom 6 forwards (Lafferty and backfilling the role left by Knies playing up in the lineup). Plus the only defensemen signed next year are Rielly and Timmins. So you basically need a whole new defense.

Not sure what you think Samsonov will want on his next deal, but I assume that Samsonov+backup will cost more than $4M.

I’m not saying this is impossible, but basically Toronto needs a bunch of guys to take team friendly deals/outperform their contracts and for nothing to go wrong.

First, to clarify a few statements:
1/ McCabe is signed next year, not a FA until 25/26
2/ didn’t think performance bonuses were allowed in elc contracts, so no worries with Knies
3/ we have 11 players signed - 7F, 3D + 1G with $34.2left in cap space

In order:
1/ sign willy to $9.2M, $25M left
2/ sign Samsonov to $5M, $20M left
3/ bring back Brodie @ $2.5M, extend Liligren at $3.5M; $14M left
4/ bring back Domi @$4.5M; $9.5M left
5/ fill out bottom 6 with marlies - Holmberg ($0.8M), Robertson ($1.1M) + bring back McMann ($1.1M); $6.5 M left
6/ Sign vet FA dman to play with Reilly for $5-5.5M leaving $1-1.5 M for at least one spare

Shoot, you're right on McCabe. My bad on that.

For ELCs, the potential ELC bonuses are listed on Puckpedia. Capfriendly and Puckpedia both have Knies with $0 of performance bonuses (which seems surprising to me, I thought college guys who sign to burn a year of their ELCs generally get performance bonuses in their contract). I don't think the bonus structure is generally well reported, so I wouldn't be surprised if he had some in his contract. It's also very weird that the Leafs are the only team in the NHL that doesn't have any performance bonuses listed for any player. Even the Isles have 8 ELCs with performance bonuses in the AHL. Anyways, we'll assume that Knies is at $0.

We're saying the same thing on the cap number, I already assumed Holmberg is on the roster this year. So it's $33.4M.

But anyways I think that supports my point: you need Brodie to take a 50% pay cut, Domi to take a pay cut instead of testing free agency at age 29, Samsonov+Woll to be a viable tandem (with Woll making next to nothing. He also may need to clear waivers this year if they choose to go with Jones are the proven backup), and then you're rounding out the roster with 4 dudes making $1M or less (Knies, Holmberg, Robertson, McMann), some of which are in key roles. And who even knows what Nylander will want.

It's not impossible by any means, but you basically need everything to go right.

I can’t speak for Leafs nation but i have a lot of confidence in Woll; could maybe even sign a cheaper FA goalie (although Sammy had a great year for us) to act as 1B to his 1A but we’ll see how the year goes.
Brodie is not getting a raise, he’s 33 + hometown boy. Domi is getting a 50% raise from this year and has said it’s his dream to play in Toronto.
The players from Marlies could be playing this year for us but lineup too deep. Another year cooking in minors will be good for development
