Unforeseen blockbuster

Created by: Leafsfan98
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 24, 2023
Published: Aug. 24, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
With Elias Pettersson stating that he wants to win above else and isn't in negotiations with VAN and a team who needs to win above all else, can a deal work? This is what I'm thinking: It's time to make a locker room change... That includes 1 of the core 5 guys... JT, Rielly and AM34 won't waive, that knocks out 3 out of the 5... We know Willy just wants the bag but it would have to be him++++ which the Leafs don't have. That leaves 1 guy, whom I think will waive... And will get praised in Vancouver while the Leafs also get a good player: Mitch Marner... Obviously, Pettersson's better, but it's a lot closer than people realize. I view this as a win-win... Marner gets the bag in Vancouver and becomes their guy with Hughes while still maintaining a chance to get into the playoffs while Pettersson can be that change of scenery (a guy who wants to win it all too) that helps the Leafs and their Stanley cup push...

I've said before that the max I would add is a 1st... But if it takes another 3rd/lower prospect, so be it

Again, this isn't exact extension, but this is under the consensus Marner will sign with Vancouver for his price and Pettersson will sign with the Leafs for his price

Thoughts?

Marner's older, expires as a UFA, but more importantly plays a less valuable position. The 1st and a meh prospect isn't worth making the swap

"but this is under the consensus Marner will sign with Vancouver for his price and Pettersson will sign with the Leafs for his price". There is absolutely no logic to that statement. Especially Marner, he is two years away from being a UFA.
Why is Myers even involved in this trade? Now you could argue two years of Pettersson for two years of Marner might be a fair swap, (I think Pettersson is better)

Yeah... But Vancouver can afford Marner... and he's only 2 years older... The 1rst was to cover that and the prospect is a sweetener

The big problem with this trade is that Marner won't be waiving his NTC.

I was getting mixed up on ideas, pardon me for that... I meant to say... (Myers was involved to give Van more cap space) is that I think Van can afford Marner and Pettersson wants to play for a team who wants to win, that team being Toronto.

Yeah, That's why I was giving the extra 1rst and prospect, bc I also believe Petey is a little better than Marner

IMO, that's not the case but there's also bc Petey's an RFA

1) We already have too many wingers
2) Pettersson expires as an RFA, Marner expires as a UFA
3) Moving Pettersson without getting a C back makes our 2C Suter/Blueger

The obvious better player is getting traded with a 3rd for a worse player and a 1st though?

Just FYI, if Pettersson took his QO and walked to UFA he would be a UFA the same season as Marner.

with His QO/Arb rights and 1 year from UFA, him being an RFA means nothing

I would agree that IF pettersson was to be traded it wouldnt be for an older expensive player, but the UFA vs RFA means nothing here

Pettersson expiring as an RFA means nothing. He will have arb rights, a high QO and will be one year from UFA (the same season Marner is a UFA). You gain zero leverage with Pettersson being an RFA vs UFA

Would adding Holmberg/Jarnkrok (who's a centre) work as a short term replacement until the offseason instead of Hirvonen?

Not really as neither of them are really a fit for 2C. The only piece Toronto could offer that could have the Canucks somewhat interested is Matthews, but that’s obviously not an option

Agreed, that's why I figured the 1rst and Hirvonen/Holmberg/Jarnkrok would make the most sense to bridge the gap between Pettersson and Marner

If Matthews is involved... Not only Pettersson would be involved, but also Quinn Hughes... And Matthews wants to remain a Leaf... So his NMC would block it

Jarnkrok could provide a short term option with flexibility and you can flip the 1rst into a 2C

I dont think it works. Vancouver desperately needs to keep pettersson. unless the bottom falls out this year (which it might) hes getting like an 8x11.5 contract offer
