Leaves room to upgrade defense or forwards if Nylander has to go

Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 26, 2023
Published: Aug. 26, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This is just a start and proposal, but BUF may not be on Nylander 10 team NTC. This leaves over 4m Cap room to go after what ever you want. Or go crazy trade Brodie and use the extra Picks to get a top ten defense if it is possible. With Brodie gone you would have over 9 m to add almost any defense willing to accept a trade here.

Trading Brodie to try to upgrade the blue line is pretty funny considering he’s been our top shutdown dmen for years now.

Maybe they need to add another prospect or pick but look at waht we can do now. Could potentially try trade Brodie and one or two 1st picks you have cap room to go after a top defense unprotected by NTC like Mcavoy, Fox, Makar, Heiskanen, Hughes, Sergachev, Dunn . Not saying any of these defense will be traded by their team but only listed these because they are elite and all have no current NTC or NMC.Or get a real good option in the 4 to 5m range like Larsson, Tanev, Pesce , etc and then get another 4 to 5 m Forward.

Buffalo doesn't want or need Nylander. Try a team that needs more goals

Brodie is not even a top 50 defender in the NHL, I am talking about elite defensemen not washed up 33 year old bums.BTW Brodie was not even a top pair defense last year .

When people say trading Brodie is bad do you honestly think when I am trying to say add a top 20 NHL defense he actually is in that conversation? With him gone in this proposal there is over 9M room , so Brodie is better then McAvoy or Fox or Makar or Heiskanen? Because you hear in the media Brodie is an elite shutdown defense it does not make it true. He was bad last year and very bad in playoffs. So bad he was moved down to 2nd pair so Schenn could play with Rielly. How does that make Brodie good and worth keeping at 5M?

Just picked on you because you have room and may possibly not be on his NTC. This type of trade works with any team not on his NTC and willing with cap room.

This guy has been trading Brodie for pennys all week; figure Brodie owes him money or beat him up in high school. Same for Nylander - literally post after post from this guy of dubious poorly thought out trades where he dumps Brodie & Nylander to “make the team better”. At first it was odd, then annoying, now just sad & tiresome

Nowhere near enough for Nylander. Also doesn't fill a need for Buffalo so just all round makes no sense.

Statistically of the major public analytics models they all had Brodie as a top 3 shutdown D last year. The eye test would back that up. I watched at least 60 leafs games and 100 total games and Brodie is very solid defensively. The place he is losing a step is his distribution. He's still great at defending but he's struggling to move the puck out of the zone. That was just exposed in the playoffs when he didn't have Reilly to help him. Play him with Rielly, Klingberg or Lili and he will be a top 10 shutdown guy next year easily.

It was painfully clear what type of defense pairs better with Rielly , a physical defense who can block shots and plays defense first. Now if Schenn filled that role better then Brodie what are we paying Brodie 5 m a year for? You can argue statistics all you want but in playoffs Brodie was the 3rd worst defense .Holl obviously can not skate backwards and turn to his right , how did he even get in the NHL? I love the shot blocking of Giordano but his shuffle run skating has gotten very exposed and can NOT be in the playoffs this year. Then Brodie was in almost every bad play in our end for the entire playoffs. In the TBL series I think only 3 goals were scored without 1 of those 3 being on the ice. I have been watching every TML for over 45 years and I can definately say those statistics mean nothing, it is what they need on the ice that makes Brodie a bad option. If they can add more toughness and grit on defense at least 2 more they may be ok but that will be very hard while keeping Brodie.

Let's not forgot those same analysts have said TML has a good chance to win playoffs for the last 5 years , how has that worked out?
