McDavid missed 7 games that year. Misrepresenting reality doesn't make your point stronger.

I just remembered he played 64 or something games that year forgot covid cut it short

Draisaitl is not decent at defending. He is atrocious at it. No point in debating that. Also points aren't the definitive unit of measurement. Matthews has better even strength offensive metrics, while Draisaitl has better PP offensive metrics. Comparing a player's skill is pretty difficult to do and theres not point in doing so.

Bad take. Here is the raw data, 5v5 rates per 60:

https://www.naturalstattrick.com/playercompare.php?fromseason=20222023&thruseason=20222023&stype=2&sit=5v5&score=all&stdoi=oi&rate=y&p1=8477934&p2=8479318&loc=B&gpfilt=none&fd=&td=&tgp=410&lines=single

Their xGA/60 isn't far apart, and Draisaitl actually had better SCA/60 and HDCA/60 numbers. Note, however, that Draisaitl had more than twice as many defensive zone starts and significantly fewer OTF starts.

Not bad for a guy who didn't get to play with the best defensive winger in the league according to Selke voters.

Basically what you have shown me is that Draisaitl outscores his problems. It is true. However that doesn't mean he is good defensively, that simply means he is just so good offensively that it covers his defensive gaps

Soooooo jealous! tears of joy

Yes, everyone should be. Having McDavid is the best thing any team could wish for. Draisaitl is not in the same realm. I'd take him over JT though

I think my favorite thing today is how you posted a link to something that destroys your argument

I showed you a direct comparison to Matthews. Their defensive stats aren't very far apart despite Draisaitl getting more than twice the defensive zone starts, significantly fewer OTF starts, not playing with the best defensive winger in the game - and that's your takeaway?

You're as biased as they come.

You didn't really show me any defensive stats. Those aren't very good at isolating a player's individual impact. Am I biased as they come? I'm literally not even in the argument. I don't cheer for the Leafs or the Oilers

You came here to say that Draisaitl is "atrocious" defensively with nothing to back it up. Now you're saying that you aren't "in the argument"? LOL.

I mean I literally posted the stat comparisons for you but go off I guess. I don't care who is better between Matthews and Draisaitl. I posted my stats, i posted my opinion. What more do you want? Don't act like there is a definitive answer here. Drai vs Matthews is very debatable which means its obviously a close comparison

Once he repeats that offensive performance (which I firmly believe he will), then he'll get consideration. Until then, he's in the same boat as many of the other names that just missed out (Thompson, Stutzle, Lindholm, Dunn, Morrissey, Montour, etc).

If he puts up another 80-point season with top defensive game...would be hard to deny

I posted the raw data. Nothing there points to "atrocious". You're probably looking at some "one number defensive impact" like WAR or GAR without knowing or understanding what data was used to create it.

His EVD being -3.8 and Def being -4.8 seems pretty bad. Do you know how GAR works? He is way below replacement level defensively. I think you are the one who needs a refresher on GAR and WAR. There are some good articles online for you to look at.

Almost across the board Matthews had better numbers. Without the benefit of playing 40% of those 5v5 minutes with McDavid. Matthews is much better than Draisaitl and no one comes close to McDavid

It's not that Draisaitl sucks, it's just that his offensive numbers are inflated due to McDavid and beyond those big point totals he has flaws. Oiler fans just ignore all that and give him credit for what McDavid does
