We need Parayko. We also cannot afford to give Nylander the 10m he wants.

Leafs need Liligren. Like how many under 25 defenders do we have? Not to mention..... he was surprisingly effective last year. He is getting better.

Move Saad at the trade deadline, don't re-sign kappanen or vrana, you'll be fine.

Leafs defense in general was surprisingly effective. That being said Liljegren doesn’t profile to be a shutdown defenseman. With the rest of our group of defenseman. We have to have a shutdown guy there to shelter Krug/Faulk if they aren’t going to play together

Agreed, Benoit, niemela, Villeneuve, Timmins is 26 I think he can be better than Liljegren throughout a whole season but I do agree that Liljegren is good and better than all those guys younger than him....

If lilly and willy go we get parayko and Rielly settled in as the top pair the next 5 years easy and neighbours has 2 years on his deal so we get rid of 2 expiring contracts.

Will Liljegren ever be a top 2 D? Probably not.

I doubt those two will get re-signed. That being said, dumping Saad to bring in a forward at the cost of our only good defensive dman is probably the exact opposite of what the Blues need to be doing.

Holy smokes, no. I'd want Neighbors + or the equivalent just as a thank you for taking on Parayko's contract. Forget sending both Nylander and Liljegren the other way. Already 30 and never turned out how it was once hoped he would. Not to say he's garbage or anything, but $6.5m is tough to swallow for him even now, let alone till he's what? 37?

Nope. I agree. His play late in the year has him looking more like a 2-way transitional D playing a zone style. Even then, he was starting to mix it up physically, I just don't think that will be his M.O.

The Blues have a few those last time I checked.

Does he necessarily need to be?

Bluelines that win these days roll 3 pairings. So, if he can handle 18-20 minutes a night, he is absolutely a keeper. And last year being his first full one in the NHL, I wouldn't dismiss top 2 possibilities (noting I am also sheepish on that call).

Timmins needs to play - I agree. The talent and pedigre is there. This is about staying healthy and ice time. Why I continue to loath the Klingberg signing. This is going to stunt any growth in Timmins game.

The rest of this extremely shallow prospect D group is still 2 years out imo.... although Niemela will be intriguing to watch playing a full year with the Marlies.

Parayko contract is an absolute albatross - Leafs should want nothing to do with it but to add nylander & Liligren is criminally preposterous

Why is there a notion that Paraykos contract is an albatross or even bad for that matter?

He’s a top 4 d at minimum and he’s used as the most labored shut down defenseman in the league currently with less than adequate partners. He hasn’t necessarily thrived in that role. But he also hasn’t really sank which is generally the only outcome you could expect when you’re playing 20 minutes a night at even strength starting 2/3rds if not more of the time in the defensive zone against other teams top 2 lines.

Is 6.5 not pretty normal for top 4 guys with term anymore?

He’s not good enough to be a top pairing shutdown d; all of his numbers - across the board - were bad. I don’t see too many teams paying 2nd pairing dmen $6.5M 🤔. Plus he has 7 more years at that hit, and he’s 30 🤯. Definition of an unmovable contract if you ask me.

You clearly didn't make this bad enough for TO. Maybe take on all their bad contracts and give them Knies and the rest of our firsts.

I don’t think any Blues fan generally would want to move him if they have an understanding of his role.

What numbers are we pointing at here? I’m genuinely curious. This notion has popped up over and over and yet there’s 5-10 Parayko trades from outside fan bases daily.

Are you looking at isolated numbers? It’s awfully hard to judge a player who is put in the worst usage in the entire league and is paired with a partner who is barely even a top 4 quality defenseman.

I hear numbers numbers numbers, but I still have not been told what the numbers are. Or why they are infinitely more important than looking at his usage and who the usage is with. We have not ran a shutdown pair or a pair that can be started in the defensive zone with any reliability outside of Parayko and whomever he is pulling around.

There are ‘free’ websites that publish advanced stats (players or teams); I use natural stats (allows you to compare players) or moneypuck (allows you to look by position). There are lots of numbers but I like for xg% (% of goals your team “should score” while you are on the ice). Parayko is bottom 20 in the league (41% xg) which is really not good. Some of it may be explicable (defensive zone starts, strength of opposition, etc) but when your numbers are that low - means you are not capable of filling the role you’re being asked to fill.
Would find it hard to believe any fan, including Blue’s fans, doesn’t think his contract is a problem.
I should note - I am far from an expert on advanced stats
