McDrai matching deals in 2025

Created by: smokewiseganja
Team: 2025-26 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 9, 2023
Published: Sep. 9, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
McDavid signs an extension at 13.5 x 8. Draisaitl signs at 13.5 x 8 aswell. I highly, highly doubt either of them would even consider leaving regardless of having a cup or not (which in 2 years, i'd say its 50/50 on them accomplishing that)

This is to demonstrate that not only could the oilers easily fit them under the cap at an expanded cap hit, it is looking increasingly likely to happen.

Not if they're smart (and I think they are). McDavid took less on his last contract in order to give the team a little extra space to improve the roster, I see him doing the same again. The lesson is the Kane & Toews matching $10.5M deals - that duo never won another playoff series let alone another Cup once their big contracts kicked in, as it degraded the roster around them.

McDavid has a reasonable claim to be the greatest of all time.

Would be crazy if he only got 13.5 x 8. There would be massive pushback from the NHLPA since it would be a brutal comp for anyone else signing new contracts. How is any player afterwards supposed to ask for more when McDavid os only get in 13.5

He took less on his last deal. So did Crosby. There's a pattern there.

Unless the Oilers or are close to winning , I don't know why Draisaitl or McDavid would want to stay with the Oiler. Eleven years might be enough. Not picking on the Oilers, that could be true for any high end UFA players who have a choice of where they want to play.

Both players will be 30 years of age when their new contracts start. Can they expect to be as good as they are now?

I totally see what you're saying but one could make the case that Edmonton has the best shot to win the cup over the next two years, not they aren't the best team in the league but I'd say their a top 5 team with the Devils, Hurricanes, Leafs and Stars. Though the Avs and Bolts aren't on the same level as those teams anymore you can count them as well as teams who are always a threat. The pacific is going to be at it's very worst these next two years which sounds insane considering how weak it's been but it's true. The Knights just aren't going to be the same team, they got their cup which is great but that core gave it all they had. The Kings and Kraken are really good teams but both seem a couple years away from being true cup contenders, until Byfield and Clarke become top line guys I don't see the Kings getting over that hump. Kraken's core is a bit more polished but they are missing a real scoring winger to pair with Beniers, they are a team with a lot of really good depth, those teams tend to be real good and competitive but never get to that finish line (2018-2022 Islanders for example). The flames and canucks have enough issues on their own right now and definitely have the talent to be cup contending teams but have a lot to sort out which can't be done in two years. Ducks and Sharks are going to be bottom feeders which the Ducks maybe being competitive that 2nd year. The central is a battle between the Avs and the Stars rn with teams like the Wild,Blues and Jets which always could surprise. The Atlantic is a blood bath (I feel like I don't need to explain this one), and the metro is also just ridiculously competitive outside of Philly. If Edmonton gets to the CF in one of those two years barring an upset, I think they get the job done.

Let's say they don't, what team whose in a position to win a cup has 30 million dollars of cap to just drop. Hell even 15 million, the answer is none. Unless they want to sign on some young promising team and wait a couple years, Edmonton gives them their best shot. The only time I've ever sign a UFA player leaving for the sake of competition was JT (which was riddled with personal reasons) or Ryan O'reilly to the Sabers (which went horribly wrong)

I'll disagree with you above UFAs not changing teams. It's happening more and more...heck even RFAs have more control over their next destination than ever before (Tkachuk and PLD) this year.

Can't forsee in the future for all team and their cap...but teams do have lots of cap as players retire for not resigned. For instance just in the summer of 2024 the Leafs will have Nylander, Brodie, Samsonov, Bertuzzi, Domi and Klingberg as UFAs. That's 28m. In the summer of 2025. 22m off the books with Tavares and Marner alone. So teams do have cap. It's just an exchange of a cap. Happens all the time.

if they don't win the cup this year u gotta trade one of them! they'll have to resign Bouchard as well and after Jake Sanderson getting 8million what will Bouchard ask 9million?
if they can't win with them now why would it be any different in 3 years?
