So here's the thing:
1- GMPD needs to start the season strong and make the playoffs, or he might be fired
2- Greig has only played 20 games in the NHL. He was sent back down to the AHL after his first few games because they thought his progress stalled. He also plays a physical game as a smallish forward, meaning he will be injury prone until he packs on muscle.
3- Pinto was a reliable forward, played all 82 games, and scored 20g. The coach and GM have done nothing but praise him and his play.
4- there are players on the roster the GM and Coach value a lot less than Pinto.
5- Norris is coming back from shoulder surgery.
6- Ottawa and Boston are in the same division, fighting for the same playoff spots.
So, with those notes in mind, you can see why this deal does nothing for the Sens.
- Lysell is still a prospect. He has 0 NHL games, and his AHL stats aren't exactly screaming that he'll be a Calder candidate.
- Steen isn't a prospect anymore. He's just a player that can't stick in the NHL. No need to waste a contract slot
- A second for 3 drafts from now does nothing
- Sens are removing an important depth player, who played 2C for them for half of last year, and trading him to a rival in dire need of centers. They don't get anything back that makes them better than they were with Pinto. Without Pinto, the center depth is terrible.
- If Pinto signs for only 2M, Ottawa EASILY can fit him in
If Boston gets Pinto, it's because they dramatically overpaid, and this trade ain't that
