This is a trade that works well for both parties.
The Leafs would finally obtain a reliable defenseman who can play the right side (and pair with Morgan Reilly). Weegar is locked up at a reasonable cap hit for long term, so he works well with the Leafs core.
Calgary would receive a goal scoring winger they desperately need since the departure of both Gaudreau and Tkachuk. Calgary also has a lot contracts expiring at the end of the year, and would be able to offer Nylander the term and AAV he desires in order to get him to stay in Calgary long term.
The risk here is that Nylander walks at the end of the year, and Calgary is left with nothing. This is why why Knies and a 1st round pick are added as a sweetener to make the deal fair.
