Thats still a 20 man roster. If Joseph is gonna be traded it has to be 100% of his contract.

Some people on this site think it will cost at least a second to move Joseph without retaining.

Maybe even a first.

I don’t think Joseph is that severely overpaid. Maybe about 900K. If Ottawa would retain 50% he’d probably already be dealt for a 2nd or 3rd

If retaining on Joseph means saving face while trying to get under the cap, then so be it.

You save face by making the playoffs. 11/7 20man roster doesn't do it. You you'll be running undermanned whenever someone is injured/sick.

If you wanted to run 11/7, you're better off waiving Joseph and sticking him in the minors until there's an injury. At least he's better depth. Not much of a diff cap wise between 50% retention and burying cap relief

I would have made other trades here.

But it would take away the focus of this AGM.

I would trade a 2nd to get rid of him if that's our only option.

Joseph at 50% retained would get back better than a 4th. I'd think multiple teams would be interested. At a $1.5m cap hit for 3 years, he's a valuable piece for any team w/ playoff aspirations

I mean Dorion is already fired - new owner just waiting to get the keys. But even for Dorion that would be terrible cap mgmt; retaining for 3 years to dump a good player just so he can sign an ever better young RFA. I mean … brutal decision making 🤦🏻

Getting more than a 4th for Joseph with retention would be a bonus.

Something like this is far more likely to happen if they decide to really move Joseph instead of Kubalik (the no brainer option), which would be surprising considering how high they have been on Jos for a while

I dug this today :

Over the last 3 seasons, among the 519 forwards who played at least 500 ES minutes, Joseph ranks 273th with 1.64 Pts/60 (higher than Kubalik, Pageau, Granlund, Yamamoto, Wennberg, Laughton (lol), Hoffman, Perry, etc)

He is a defensive forward and PK specialist and yet produces like an average 8th/9th forward. Considering his worth is mainly on the defensive side of things, he's worth holding to and if he rebounds to 2021-22 form, he's actually valuable

All that being said, retain 950 K$ which would allow for a 21 men roster. Joseph at 2.0 AAV is a very good gamble for some team, particularly considering he's just 26 y/o, a top skater and a top PKer.
