You're undervaluing Montreal's 1st round pick unless you are top 10 protecting it (at a minimum).
They also won't be using their last retention slot on a multi-year contract while they have players with 1-2 years of term they could be looking to trade this season or next.
There might be "some" desire to pursue Lafreniere IF he came at a reasonable price (around Dach's value), but the last thing Montreal needs is to bring in more forwards. You're essentially bringing in 3 forwards "with term" for 1 (Anderson).

Hagel was younger and on a cheaper contract though along with those picks being late 1sts, not a possible early 1st from Montreal

Thought it was 2 rangers 1st. Yes he was younger but thats not too relevant considering Mangiapane is in his prime and he doesn't leave his prime before the contract ends. It's not an absurd overpayment though NYR probably doesn't make that trade if I had to guess
