He will be gone by the trade deadline. Tre tried to target Gudas and Dumba before Klingberg and had no other options

How will Klingberg be gone??? He has 10 no team trade list. He certainly isn't going to lousy team with cap. Obviously Gudas and Dumba didn't want to come to the Leafs

hes a playoff performer and much needed offense from the blueline. 100$ says hes part of the leafs when game 1 starts.

Seems particularly bone headed for Columbus to consider moving their current 1C, and best value contract in the league, and captain, to acquire a 5th NHL caliber RHD and a project winger.

They're trying to make the playoffs this season, this trade would set them back in that regard.

Yeah exactly, Gudas and Dumba didn't want to be a Leaf. I'm just saying that Klingberg wasn't his first option

Reilly and Klingberg could give the Leafs lots of PP time together. If they went with three forwards regularly...Matthews/Marner/Nylander/Tavares/Bertuzzi. that's a darn good PP potentially.
Leafs could then go with just 11 forwards and 7 Dmen

Toronto wants Klingberg and Columbus wants Jenner. Not sure about the logic behind this trade.

Highly unlikely that the Leafs play 2D on the PP1.

Far more likely they play a more balanced 2 PPs. Last year PP1 played about 80% of the minutes. Expect that to fall to 60% this year with Rielly/Domi/Bertuzzi/Knies/Jarnkrok on the second unit.

I generally agree with you but disagree here. Both Gudas and Dumba signed for less on lesser teams. I can understand why Gudas might avoid the Leafs after playing with Florida but I don't think those two were targeted over Klingberg. I think Tre made a shrewd bet on Klingberg outperforming the salary we signed him at on a team like the Leafs; It was only 3 years ago that he was 2nd in points on a team that went to the Stanley cup final, behind only Heiskanen. Scoring more as a defenseman than any forward on a Cup final team showed what he's capable of and I think a team like the Leafs can bring the best out in a player like that.

Offense from the blueline was critical to our success this past postseason and was almost non-existent beyond Rielly. Klingberg should help to address that and the Leafs just need to put him in a position where he can find success, which I think they will.

Time will tell of course.

Gudas wanted too much money and Dumba isn't exactly great. He could still become a leaf though.

Is there any one who's more inline with Keefe's system? I think Klingberg is going have a great year. He's definitely part of the solution but I do think we need some brute force on the Blueline. Either 1RD (hopefully Liljegren takes that spot next to Rielly), or some meet for the 3rd pair.

You know what? Fine. Take Jenner. I don’t care any more.

But we’re not taking Klingberg. Columbus already has five NHL-caliber RD and Gudbranson, all of whom are better than Klingberg at defense.

I absolutely agree with all of this. The system the Leafs play and the commitment to defense from the forward group, as well as the obvious offensive talent we have makes this a perfect fit for Klingberg in my opinion. I also agree with the need for more brute force on the backend.

I like this RipNasty, I think we've turned a corner. Lets both make an effort to be more civil with each other and let bygones be bygones - apologies for my harshness in the past.

Cheers, and GLG

It terms of overall value for the Jackets I think this is a win, but I would agree that it doesn't make sense for them in a vacuum. That said though, I think that return would be enough to land someone like Lindholm if he were available, even if it required a 3 way trade. That's a combination of trades that could end up being exactly with CBJ needs.

It was already reported that Tre gave Gudas an offer (which he declined) and also tried to go after Dumba (which Dumba thought could get more than what the Leafs offered). He shifted over to Klingberg when there were no other defensemen available

I mean you're right about Gudas but I don't think he was targeted over Klingberg, I think each player would have filled two very different needs the Leafs have. I think the Leafs wanted to add offense and get meaner on the backend, neither player would have done both those things on their own. The Leafs also signed Klingberg on day 1 of FA and were only reported to have poked around on Dumba after that signing.

Impossible to know without being inside Tre's head, but I really don't think Klingberg was a fallback.

How many players do you know can lay down a 60+ point pace for 3.75 million against the cap?
