Description
No team trades a star without an overpay, it just doesn't happen. (Even my trade may not be enough) I'm not sure why we'd want to lose a ton of prospects and picks for someone potentially a bit better than Suzuki. Just be patient, we have great prospects coming up. Regardless, he's gonna sign.

I could see the Habs overpaying for someone like Zegras. They desperately need a real 1C, don't have anyone developing that could fill that role and Zegras is seen as someone who will grow into it. I think it's more likely they shop for Pettersson from Vancouver though, depending on how this season goes for the Canucks.

Not sure of the actual value for Zegras is since he was playing with Anaheim, hence could he have been a 35-40 goals scorer had he been in another more top 15 club? But then again he'll be coming into a not so better team so woudl he do better in MTL?

I think your proposal is considered a high value trade considering your giving up Mailloux, Slaf a 1st and a 2nd (Mysak is mostly a filler at this point or depth player at best). But is Zegras looking for a pay-day? I'm thinking if that's the price to pay for him, he would've already have been signed by now. I'm just assuming here, but considering he was a top 10 pick, plus had reasonable seasons with the club I'm thinking he's gonna be looking in the 10.5M$ range for 8 seasons, else a 7 to 9M$/yr for 4 years knowing how some of the players are being careful right now and looking for short term with a bit less money in order to get more money long term once the cap goes up.

In all ANA get some very good assets for one player, Mailloux looks like something Habs would regret trading out. Slaf.. 50/50.. He needs to learn how to play in the shorter rinks and keep his head up else he's going to be one of those players who'll end up with more health issues in the long run.

I would say Zegras is much better than “a bit better than Suzuki” lol he already has 1.5x his points at a younger age on a worse team. I agree that Montreal shouldn’t pay for him cause it would be way too much but he is much better than Suzuki already lol

Dach tbf. Let the boy develop properly, I think he’s MTL’s 1C by 2025-26

Its been so long, if ever, since the Habs had a true grass roots build of a team that Im actually excited to see the Habs NOT pursue big names at the cost of picks and prospects and just develop their own stars for once.

Zegras would be amazing to add but the cost would be rightfully way too expensive.

Your team description hits the nail on the head -- thoughtful and well-reasoned. Montreal shouldn't be trading for Zegras.
