If the Selke was really about the best defensive forward and not the forwards that media people think are good defensively, Matthews would be a finalist.

Heiskanen is an interesting one! Love to see it! Think the Calder will be Bedard, feel like with the media hype and most likely putting up great numbers will be too much for anyone else to steal it from him unless Hughes puts up 70 pts lol Selke is up for grabs now without Bergeron, Hischiers a good bet.

I'd be surprised to see Luke top 3 just because of those top 3 forwards being so good.

Regarding Bedard and the Calder, maybe, but he's on a pretty bad Chicago team and'll probably need time to figure stuff out. Hughes already has an NHL goal(a pretty nice one as well), just figured, he's an easier bet as I've seen him play in the NHL, he's on a good team, and he's playing with Jack Hughes which can make things easier for him.

If something happens to Hamilton, maybe Hughes gets PPPs on PP1, but he will be on PP2 and only get like 30 seconds each.

I just think Bedard is gonna get 20+ mins a night and most PP time so he’ll have to put up good numbers and he’ll be the only one lol will look like Bure on those Florida teams where he put up double/triple of the next guys 😂

Matthews has had one good season defensively (21-22) so let's not act as if it's just the media.

He had more defensive touches by a forward than any other NHL forward. He finished way ahead of Bergeron who actually didn't even face that much shutdown work, he was given loads of offensive zone starts. And won the award because of his past ability. Not because he was actually the best defensive forward last season.

22/23 season stats from Moneypuck.

Patrice Bergeron
O-zone starts: 24,8%
D-zone starts: 20,2%
D-zone giveaways: 7

Auston Matthews
O-zone starts: 21,7%
D-zone starts: 5,2%
D-zone giveaways: 21

What even is a defensive touch?? Per Evolving-Hockey (at 5v5)

Matthews
-Offensive zone starts: 16.6%
-Neutral zone starts: 18%
-Defensive zone starts: 5.9%
-On-the-fly starts: 59.5%

Bergeron
-Offensive zone starts: 22.7%
-Neutral zone starts: 13.4%
-Defensive zone starts: 16%
-On-the-fly starts: 48%

Yes, Bergeron had more OZ starts but he also had 3x more defensive zone starts which you conveniently ignored. Also, starting in OZ doesn't necessarily mean you face less " shutdown work", players quickly make lines change. Bergeron played against top quality of competition much more than Matthews. As for the defense:

Matthews
-Defensive Goals Above Replacement: 0.1
-Expected Def. Goals Above Replacement: -0.9

Bergeron
-Defensive Goals Above Replacement: 6.5
-Expected Def. Goals Above Replacement: 6

Couldn't have picked a worse award to cry about reputation. This isn't even close.

Matthews also played a lot more minutes as well. But giveaways are never a good indicator of anything. Flipping the puck out of danger to centre is a technically a give away.

Bergeron was not remotely close to the best defensive forward last year. Not even close, he got the award as a reward for his career. The selke is a joke.

Are we really trying to compare Matthews to Bergeron with defensive play? Like don’t get me wrong, Matthews isn’t the worst but he’s not even in the same realm as Bergeron, career wise or last year lol only year you could argue was 21-22 but Matthews defensive play fell off last year. I mean, Marner is by far the best defensive forward on the leafs

More minutes doesn't really matter as the stat is a percentage of each players zone starts.
Giveaways is a fairly good stat imo.

Skill players always have a proportionately high number of giveaways, so using that as a knock against them is ridiculous. Especially considering a guy like Matthews comes back and takes the puck away as much as he does.

You're taking things as insults alot it seems. I didn't bring giveaways up to knock Matthews, but as a statistic counter argument to Matthews being better defensively than Bergeron. Because what I got from your original comment was that Bergeron is overrated defensively, and Matthews should be recognized instead, and the stats seem to say otherwise as far as I can interpret them.
