Cap Sorted

Initial Creation Date: Sep. 29, 2023

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Trades
TOR
  1. Behrens, Sean [Reserve List]
  2. Gulyayev, Mikhail [Reserve List]
  3. MacDermid, Kurtis ($493,750 retained)
Additional Details:
This is the type of trade Colorado is great at making. They get Lili who can play in the Top 6 this year and instantly improve it over Jack Johnson (who becomes the #7) and they also get someone who could step into the top 4 (maybe even top 2) next year when Toews leaves.

Cost is a B+ and B- prospect and a depth piece. They also get a goalie who can be a suitable backup in the deal.

Retention is done by a 3rd team who get the 4th for it.

Abruzzese is a C level prospect thrown in because Colorado is a little short upfront in the AHL (currently on 11 forwards signed and eligible to play in the AHL assuming they carry 13 on the NHL roster).

literally, a guarantee they never consider anyone but themselves. This doesn't work cap-wise at all for the avs.

How does it not work cap wise?

They have $525,000 in cap space and the difference between Lili and MacDermid is $493,750

So they are $32,250 below the cap after this trade.

Capwise it’s stupid, asset-wise it’s stupider. Ignoring MacDermid, the Avs trade their two top defensive prospects for a defenseman that would be hard capped as a 5/6D in Colorado, a C prospect, and a goalie that will be on waivers in a few days.

I also like the fantasizing that Liljegren can become a top 4 or even a top 2 defenseman if Toews leaves. If Liljegren miraculously becomes a top pairing guy as a 24 year old: surprise, he’s not under contract for 2024-2025. Good luck re-signing him. Not to mention that he wouldn’t play over Makar, Byram, Manson, or Girard.

Avs counter and offer Ben Meyers, Brad Hunt, Nate Clurman and a 4th for Cowan, Minten, and Reaves 50% retained.

okay, sorry, it works with LTIR, which i forgot we'd put Frankie on. The Avs seem like they want to carry 2 scratches this year, and they can't carry 2 with Liljegren on the roster when Frankie comes back.

Regardless, this trade is bad. You have to drop a player for cap reasons, you're going to drop a goalie no matter what, and you're asking for a 1st round pick, a 2nd round pick that is likely an NHLer, and retention on possibly the worst player in the nhl in return. It just doesn't work.

What happens next year when Liljegren needs a contract, Toews needs a raise, and Landeskog comes off LTIR?

Hahaha aggressive, it doesn't work cap wise, it might work with Frankie on LTIR, however when he's healthy it won't...
Unfortunately the avs dont threaten their goalies with buyouts unless they take a trip to rhobidas Island.

You're adding 2 contracts to the avs total seeing how gulyev and behrens aren't under contract yet I believe.. with Colorado still needing to decide on kirivanta other unsigned players it's not ideal.

So now in December we lose jones to waivers or he plays for the eagles, Frankie comes back and we lose someone else to make room, plus abruzzese never plays a game for the avs

Are we also retaining on macdermid? Because that wont happen
