I can see the Sabres having interest in this. They may try to fill from the current roster, but for a third, I'd take the insurance. Plus nobody ever tries to get smaller for the playoffs.

I highly doubt Laffy gets traded for a rental and AHL defenseman. Picks don’t make up the difference

If he is traded for a rental, it’ll definitely be for a high caliber player

LA says no thanks. As it sits LA has a little over 900k in cap space with only 5 defensemen on the roster. Meaning once Spence gets put back on the roster they will have a little over 100k in cap space. So they wont magically be able to produce 4.5m in cap space to take on Pac and Jensen. That being said there is also no room for either guy on the roster, best line Pac would be able to slide into would be the 4th line and Jensen at best would slide into the 3rd defensive pairing. Kings will not pay a first for 2 guys to slide into rolls with limited minuets.

Also didnt WSH trade a 3rd to get Eddy at 50% retained? Isnt he currently out with a broken hand? Pretty sure that lowers his value a bit.

I'll ignore what I see as too high of a price you have EDM paying for Dowd and ask: how do you justify having Dowd @ 50% retained for 1.5 years even within arm's reach of both Pacioretty & Jensen @ 1mil retained for 2.5 years value-wise? Sure, a 1st + a 4th is more valuable than a 2nd + a 3rd but it's really not that big enough of a difference to justify what I see as a VAST difference in the quality of assets going out.

On the one hand, Dowd is likely the league's best 4C at 650k for another year.
On the other, Jensen is a consistent and capable 2RD at 3mil and, given that you're involving him in a deadline deal, Pacioretty is at least a middle-6 complementary scoring W rental. This deal also occupies a retention slot for an extra year on top of the other one.

Laf stinks

He's a first overall pick that's underperforming on a team looking to win now. You'd be stupid not to consider swooping in an taking him.
