Does Marleau make sense??

Description
Short answer: I don't think so.

Sounds like SJ has a 2yr offer for him on the table but he's looking for 3yrs. At how much? I can't see the leafs going to 3yrs and paying him somewhere between 5.5-6 per. Maybe if there's a deal in place to move JVR or one of our young RW'ers for more defence help...otherwise you're creating a scenario where hyman, soshnikov, kapanen are either in the AHL or getting reduced ice time. Just doesn't seem like the right move for this squad at face value.

I doubt Brown will only be getting 2.5M, more like 3.0. Jumbo signed for 6.5M I believe, I suspect Marleau will expect same if he moves out of SJ. Lou said Hainsey will be in top 4. He played payoffs on RH side, so I see him there.
I think Kappy will be on 4th line to start year.

I think he's a perfect fit to play with Matthews, but it does make things difficult. I feel if Marleau does eventually have interest in coming to the Leafs they will make room, but in your team Kapanen is in the minors which will not happen. I want Kapanen top 9 next year.

If Marleau really had a true interest in joining the Leafs, I don't think he would be trying to squeeze for an extra year on his contract. Hey, I don't blame him for "squeezing" but if that what it takes. I'd rather decline.
I agree with Matthews34, gotta see what Kapanen can do in the top 9 or maybe even in the top , replacing Hyman.

I'm not disagreeing with any of the comments...in fact the points most of you are making are the point of this roster...so show how adding Marleau doesn't make much sense to me. Babs seems to love Hyman and I can't see anyone else getting dumped to the minors to make room for Sosh or Kapanen....that's why I don't see term, cap dollars and roster space being used on Marleau as a good fit unless there's deals in place to trade some of our young wingers for help on D.

Marleau would be a good influence, and could anchor a PP2.

But those weren't the Leafs' problems last season, and right now Gardiner & Marincin hold uncontested spots so how would you work on that in the next few years with $3.8 million of cap space. Every D under 30, save for Franson, is signed and the rest are expensive $4-6 million 38 year olds.

Every great hockey move hurts when it's made. You said Kapanen and Rychel aren't wanted, try to find who could use them.

Not a fan of this deal. I like Marleau but giving $6.25m for his years 37-40 during a timeframe when Matthews, Marner, Nylander and Gardiner will all need significant raises and young wingers who have shown that they may be deserving of ice time with the big club seems like an odd move. I'm still convinced we'll be seeing some combination or kapanen, sosh, brown, picks moved in a deal for a defenceman.
