I don't know what kind of contract people expected to be suggesting this is a bad signing. He probably even left money on the table.
The contract will be front loaded because Montreal can afford to pay the majority of the actual dollars.

If/When it is time to move him, he'll either remain affordable while we face a rebuild, or be moved to a team that has the cap space to spare, while costing them less in salary.

The real issue here is whether there is any point having a $10M goaltender when your GM can't put a winning team in front of him.

Yea it's a shame that the only team Price is apart of that can win is Team Canada. He deserves a solid team, although with Drouin and Alzner MTL should be better next year.

Speaking of winning...when was the last time the leafs won a game against the Habs? hmmmmm although they should have a better chance in the near future, Matthews, Marner, and Nylander are going to have to get used to facing Price in a Habs uniform for literally the first half of their career.

Oh you can make your taunts as long as you want but deep down you know that your Habs won't be able to contain: Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Brown, JVR, Kadri, Rielly, Gardiner, Zaitsev, and Andersen for much longer. Prepare to surrender the Atlantic. laugh

Drouin is an instant weapon.
Alzner > Emelin
Schlemko > Beaulieu
Holland > Flynn

On top of that Bergevin has been a master at manipulating the cap. He isn't done either.

I'll give you Matthews, Marner, Nylander those guys are something else. but I stopped reading after that. Nothing special that pretty much any team comparably has.

Ha, because MTL definitely has more young depth (sarcasm intended). Why don't you take read some stats on these guys?

MB is doing to the Habs what Burke did to the Leafs. Insisting on an old school philosophy in a a modern NHL. Burke's "truculence" is Bergevin's "character". MB is a little better than Burke, but he's still moving in the wrong direction. You don't continuously trade off your skilled players. You put them into a position to succeed by surrounding them with a strong supporting cast.

Exactly. It wasn't Subban's fault. He gave everything for the team. Same with Galchenyuk, find him someone he has chemistry with, don't trade him.

And he has clearly also lost Radulov and Markov who are hard to replace, plus might have lost a future top pairing D to get Drouin. Wouldn't call it a great off season

Markov & Radulov haven't signed anywhere yet. Im sure everyone involved wants the same thing. Its just to make number work. I expect both will be re-signed. Then we'll see a trade to balance out the forwards. Habs will have 8 top 9 wingers. They won't ply Lehkonen & Shaw on the 4th line. Bergevin will make a trade for a center to balance out the roster. Any one of Pacioretty Shaw Gallagher Galchenyuk or Byron will be in play. Including McCarron and Scherbak. It's win now time in Montreal. I'm very confident the roster will be sound come the start of the season and Habs will be clear contenders.

He wants 7m for 6yrs. Habs want 6 for 3yrs. They are probably haggling over a year and 500k. But with with Price signing, they know Bergevin's budget isn't as flexible as before. The dominoes will fall.

Just heard Bergevin say: "Habs cannot sign both Markov and Radulov at their demands". So MTL might sign one of them but not the other.

thats why its a bad deal. Not saying price isn't worth it, but what's the poiint of putting 10.5M in a goalie when you don't even have a 1C...

Henrik Lundqvist is sitting at 9.5 Million, if I'm Carey Price I'm saying to myself: "hey I'm better than that guy, I should be paid more!" Yes 10.5 was a little much, maybe 10 or 9.75 would have been better, but I'm sure Price was a little tired of failed season after failed season with Montreal. Bergevin knew that if he let Price walk, he'd likely loose his job, you do what ever it takes to keep someone like Price. Worst case scenario: 6 or 7 years down the road Montreal trades Price and is forced to retain salary. Yes this deal is pricey (no pun intended) but Montreal did what had to be done.

Okay, but what are the chances either come down? I can see Markov, but Radulov has only been in MTL for 1 year, he doesn't have the same attachment. Radulov may go were the money is, but we'll see. We should find out within the next day or so.

This is the price (haha) of having the world's best goalie on a bargain contract for six years and going nowhere with him.

If they re-sign both Radulov & Galchenyuk they'll have 8 top9 wingers. Because Galchenyuk is not a center.

LW
Pacioretty
Drouin
Lehkonen
Byron

RW
Radulov
Galchenyuk
Gallagher
Shaw

You can't win having a goalie with a 10.5M cap hit who always gets injured anyways. Even if they took 1 of the rules I asked for the Cap it would equate to not being allowed to give a contract greater than the current Cap Max. Hence best Price would get for 8 years is 77M which is still a 9.625M cap hit. Quick I think had a 1.8M cap hit when he won his first cup, Murray was like 575K salary, yet NHL don't learn by overpaying goalies... Even last Cup had Rinne what is he like 7M who totally got outclassed by Murray closer to half his cap hit. Even Quick when he played Henrik he is like 5.8M while Henrik is 8.5M. I'd say about max can pay a goalie while winning a cup is like 6M, even the Vezina winner got bounced early on CBJ. Insanity deals like this can only lead to another lockout at best. NHL acts like they are government running up a debt that the people or in this case fans will have to pay for. I'd say Montreal should go for broke all in this year before that contract kicks in destroying any hope they have to ever win another Cup. Hopefully he has another 12 game season where he wins 10 games or gets hurt in the Post Season to teach them a lesson the hard way smile.

BTW best this can end is in a buyout, guy who never won a Cup is getting paid like top player in league like Kane and Toews smile.
