What if The Leafs stay on the outside of the playoff line

Created by: GM_SZK
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 19, 2023
Published: Oct. 19, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Trying to get cap as close as possible but can assume some injuries or teams clear somehow, probably a 3rd team to retain.

I don’t see a market for Domi, Klingberg or Samsonov unless a team has injuries.

Well if they are out but in the race, they are probably not selling. Also, there's always next year, so they won't trade guys like Nylander and Samsonov for returns like that.

    67 years plus 4 games…

They won’t sell though even if, I do agree with that. I doubt if many of the guys would want to be rented. Also I don’t think they have many easy sells outside of Nylander.

They won’t and outside of Nylander I don’t think they have much to sell.

Leafs Cup drought is 57 years, yes?

They got 3 picks and a prospect for Nylander, how much more do you want for a rental. There would be a bidding war for him for sure but…

Samsonov wouldn’t have much value as he would just be a backup and has a high hit.

I do agree they won’t do this, never…plus all they need is a better coach.

They would keep them and either sign them or lose them.

For the sake of argument though, let's just say they are just say they are trading them for futures, they are really getting nothing out of the Samsonov trade so why do it in the first place? Even if he's being acquired as a backup, he should at least fetch a 2nd or 3rd considering he has starter potential. As for Nylander, that's a good return for a rental but the trade doesn't make sense for Toronto nor for Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh would have to choose between signing Guentzel and Nylander, they already have a weak prospect pool, and they have an aging core; in 4-5 years, all they would have is Nylander or Guentzel and a very long road to a rebuild. The reason why the trade wouldn't make sense for the Leafs is that they aren't a rebuilding team, and especially considering that you are suggesting that they clear house and trade Bertuzzi and Domi as well, they aren't even left with someone who can replace him in their top 6 for next year and beyond. They would likely want an older top 6 player with term + futures or a young NHL player with top 6 or top 4 potential + futures. Otherwise, signing Nylander is the more likely option, or they would at least need Bertuzzi to be a fit and re-signed if they were to accept something like you proposed.
